Howdy.  The ideas are kinda happening but they're not getting fleshed out into full tracks yet.  I know it's only week 5 and I told myself to just have fun this year but so far I feel like I haven't caught up to the productivity I had back in 2020's WB.  Last week was rough for my family and it kind of pushed me to dust off my digital piano and just start pretending like I could play piano again.  The past year or so I've only been using my tiny 25 key Bass Station as a controller so that means much more editing inside the box.  That can get a bit tedious or at least result in a stiff neck with the grid editing and such.  So I guess what I'm trying to say is I wanted to bring out the musician side of me more so than the producer.  I'm nowhere near what I used to be able to play.  Hopefully I'll get that back.  Riding a bike I suppose?  Oh right the track.  It started off as a Piano only thing and then I randomly threw a bunch of drum loops into Izotope Trash and it kinda went somewhere.  I honestly would love to just make 10 more piano tracks in a row if I could trick myself into liking what I make.  I miss the days of having access to a real upright piano.  Anywho thanks for reading my weekly novels and taking the time to listen I really appreciate all your feedback and support.  Hope you are well.

I really enjoyed this. I could happily listen to more piano meddling if you can convince yourself to make more of it. tongue

I support your idea to check a real piano. This will be very inspiring for you. Thanks for this weeks upload.

I like the sound of the beats with the piano.  It's classy and cool at the same time.  I'm sure the more you play the piano the more of it will start to "come back" to you.

I LOVE THE WEEKLY NOVELS

Hope you're doing okay from last week and all.

WB is all about focusing on the work and not worrying about the outcome.  By the way, I'm still listening to Iridescent on repeat while i'm driving and doing errands.

I love the background story and the experiments about creativity. It's interesting to see how tracks evolve differently when we use a real instrument compared to programming stuff. It opens different venues and closes others. I like the sound you are getting from the piano, it reminds me of some NIN tracks. Cool lofi beat in the back. I like the atmosphere of this track, there is something dreamy/foggy about it. The lines you are adding from 2:24 on is a nice touch, I like how that builds up in the track.

This is fucking sweet dude, I love the low passed drums.  Does the filter open up when the snare hits a little, or is there like some kind of distortion or something happening on it?  Also, really digging that chill synth sequence that comes in around 2:25.  Its funny to hear you've been producing on a Bass Station!  I always figured you composed on an 88 key and played everything right in.  Not that there's anything wrong with midi editing, that's how I do most of my key parts.  I'm sure you'll get you piano chops back before long though, muscle memory is real.

Thanks I am.  I definitely do need to change my mindset a bit with the expectations thang.  That's awesome you're still listening to Iridescent.  So far that def is the one I'm most happy with.  Of course it was just a happy accident.  So weird how that is.  You try and try and nothing comes out..  Then for example yesterday I was just trying to play along to some other track's chord progression.  So as I was searching for the notes by ear on the keys the first 3 notes I hit were not what the track had but instead I heard a completely new idea.  Thank god Ableton Capture is around.  Anytime I purposely hit record it's like the Ableton record audience makes me mess up.  But i digest!

Thanks it might remind you of NIN because the keyboard I use is the same stage keyboard/piano that he used to use on a lot of his tours. Ironically he just announced a new small tour yesterday.   I'm not sure if he still uses it or an upgraded version but when I read that years ago and then saw a used version with a drastically reduced price in a music store I had to get it.  I honestly only use it for that one main piano.  But it does have a nice set of sounds.  Oh and I also have listened to Trent's music way too much so yea my brain tends to kiiiiiinda rip/explore his melodic territory. smile

Thanks man!  Yeah I had a few loops kinda intermingling amongst each other. Then fiddled with a couple instances of Izotope Trash's presets.  Then a mild lp auto filter automating the frequency to hopefully make the super repetitive loop sound less.... repetitive.. tongue

I like the addition of the drum loops sound to the piano.  Lovely moody synths come in at the midpoint work really well as they build into a cascading effect with the piano.  I hope you get some more keys but you're certainly working those 25 on the Bass Station.  Nice work.  I would look forward to hearing another 10 piano pieces as you evolve them in different ways.

Hahaha "Weekly Novels"... That's one of the things I love most about your tracks, Eric: the amount of detail and background about how everything came to life.

Loving those final pads. So soft and subtle. Is that a softsynth ?

Sorry to appear so late into your WB streak, though I'm really happy you came for another round smile

i learned to play piano on an old gutted upright player piano - i miss the feeling of real piano's too!

this piece is really lovely - i really like the little detail that came in round 2:24

Enjoyed this, especially the piano and drum sound, it all goes together to create something unique. I totally hear you about wanting to play an instrument vs. editing in the DAW! More fun and kind of meditative-life-enriching-destressing and whatnot ... and we're here creating to have at least some fun right? Looking forward to hearing more, cheers!

This is solid, crunchy/trashed drums sound so good (love izotope trash), I think the musician definitely came out, piano sounds fantastic!  You always do a great job of creating emotion with your tracks.

The tracks works well I reckon, piano chops or not.  The filtered beats definitely add to the track and the other complimentary parts. Cruisy. Very enjoyable.
