The Slowdown

By Suhpos on January 28, 2024 11:17 pm

I started monday by recording two tracks of ukulele and melodica and when I slowed it down I really liked the sound of it. it started with half speed so one octave below. I meant for it to be a song with lyrics with a bunch of tracks and blablabla... never got around to it.

yesterday in the evening I rerecorded the tracks and instead of half speed its a fifth lower (don't really know how to say it in terms of speed (half-half speed???)). i ended up soaking the slowed down melodica tracks in reverb and delay to make it drawn out (someone was talking about using reverb in moderation?). Anyways I didn't really have time to write a song so i decided that it would just be kind of a backing track and I recorded a melodica solo on top of it.

This is the first thing I've uploaded which wasn't recorded on my phone, so hopefully it sounds better. not really sure about the mix. It was pretty hard to control the bass. I feel like when it sounded good in the headphones, it was too much in the speakers, I guess it's practice makes perfect, but if anyone has some tips..

Dig the tempo. It gives the combo this kind of Wild West feel. Not like, shootout at high noon… but coming home after a long day. Really enjoyed it

This is beautiful! Great creative choices and what chops on the melodica!!! fav!!

Beautiful! The instrumentation is great. I really love melodica when it's done well, and it's definitely done very well here.

loved this. great feel, very chillout after a long day. A bit longing and haunting, while also just trying to find a place to rest.

I am not an experienced mixer, but my only real goals when mixing are to make sure each voice can be appreciated, while when multiple parts are going to make sure that the main musical idea is being supported and not drowned out. I think you achieved this on this track personally, at least while listening through headphones. I'd also be interested in understanding if people have other mixing tips/things they are listening for when mixing.

Thank you!!! Very generous of you to leave all of that valuable information here! Will definitely try to compensate for my headphones on the next mix, and look into the solutions that you’ve suggested. Maybe it will do something good. Never would have thought to do that on my own.

Thank you! I think your way of thinking of mixing is probably healthy. Keep the goal simple i like that. I feel like sometimes i want things that are simply not in the sounds, maybe i should consult with this mindset then. Though sometimes when you’re in it, it can be a bit like staring at the same thing for too long, things start to distort.

I LOVE this! It has a sound that puts it in a place, tells a story. I think the reverb and choice of instruments achieves this. Actually taking down the pitch gives it the sombre feel.  Only thing that could be better is to have a recognizable melody, saw what you wrote tho and it’s a good way around lack of time.

I like the melodica a lot! Guess that’s why they call it a melodica, great for melodies! Super nice impactful moment around 2:00 when the horn thing is mourning and the melody goes high.

I think the mix was good, listened on phone and then again on mono speaker that is v bassy. I don’t know how to fix a mix, usually I find the problem is from the recording itself and anything I do to try to fix it is just making it worse. I could imagine recording ukulele is not a straightforward process because of the way mics work, when u put it closer you get more bass usually. My trick was to invest in nice speakers so I can really hear the music well, the quality of my output skyrocketed after I got them, can recommend if you have the means. Once I know I can trust the speakers I try to use my ears but when tired it can also be a good trick to spot some issues in the visual eq thingy in logic… its dangerous tho, you might make it worse if you work visually. So yea not much useful tips, but the track is good so you’re already on a good track (I think I’m tired)

Thank you for your thourough reply, this is very appreciated. I think maybe you are right that it could have been nice to with some kind of a theme here. Though that’s really not my strongest skill, to be honest.

The part around 2:00 was really an artefact of laying down each track after another while kind of improvising, to the previous stuff. Slowly the things reinforced themselves somehow.

Thank you for the mixing tips, probably should have done some kind of spot eq as it was a specific frequency really that was the problem. I did record very closely mainly because it was the middle of the night when i was recording it haha. Probably didn’t help when I slowed it down….
Actually I’m mixing in both speakers and headphones… just need to improve my skills i guess…

just beautiful

Pretty crazy that's a ukulele, it sounds so deep and grand. Kudos to the melodica as well, always good.
