Life is a Broken Record

By Suhpos on January 14, 2024 7:56 pm

Hi all! First timer here. Missed the first week, but i guess there are plenty left. So much cool music on here, very exciting!

For this piece of music I recorded a small piece on a fretless guitar. It was a bit out of tune (let’s call it “microtonal”) but i wanted to see how I could cut it up in different ways. Before i knew it, it was too late to record a second take (well i guess i could have but I didn’t feel like it.) I tried to make the entire piece from just those few seconds of recording. It was pretty hard to keep it interesting, so i kind of mangled it to sound broken (hence the name), I’m not sure if have gone a little too far haha. I also recorded bottles (again “microtonal”) and a glass. The bass was a sample from the software. Everything was recorded and edited on my phone in Cubasis. Anyways I really liked the idea though I got a bit tired of it halfway through the process. Any tips on not losing interest before you are finished would be greatly appreciated, Thank you!

Nice exotic soundscape!

Nice distortion!

Love this track because it's so strange and unlikely! That guitar line is super interesting on its own, and it's not so square as to be easy to detect exactly when it loops. So it was fun to listen to with the distortion and delay, and try to see where it goes without being hypnotized. Love the title too!

I think the length is appropriate, could be even shorter. I guess that's a good trick to keep things interesting is to keep them short and change to a new section or just finish when it's no longer interesting to hear. Thanks for sharing! big_smile oh and welcome to wb!

very nice, reminded me of Hashshashin. looking forward to more!

Working with the takes you have not the takes you want is a vibe. Love the result!

sounds dope! could be something on the soundtrack for The Mandalorian or something similar. It gives me western deserted landscape vibes. My tip for not losing interest is: (assuming there's enough time left) stop listening to your current track for a day or two, forget what it sounds like if you can. then when you come back and listen, try to sense where the track wants to go next, does it want a crescendo or a breakdown section, does it need another counter melody maybe. when you listen to it too many times, at least for me, I get stuck with a list of things that I could add and this drowns out my sense of where the music itself wants to go. hope this helps!

Thank you for the advice! Definitely been having a problem with listening to many times over, so that hits right at home. Don’t know if I have time with the next one to wait two days, and the temptation to listen to it quickly to see where I’m at is quite strong (especially since I’m doing it on my phone for now so it’s always right there.) but i should probably do someone to force myself not to listen too much.
It’s funny with the length i started thinking that i would be making an eight minute long trance piece but then it got harder as I went along I think you’re that it could be even shorter. I’m in a similar situation with the current piece haha. Thank you!

Thank you! I like to work this way I’m finding will keep going with limitations like (though a bit more intentional.)
