Sick Cycle (WB40)

Went with another synth wave style track this week. The background part with the 16th notes came to me first and I spent about 30 minutes writing that part out with a bass accompaniment. Spent another 30 minutes writing in some drums and putting together a basic structure. Was messing around on the MS2000 to try and get a nice sound and found that overgaining my bass patch came out with a super crunchy square wave style sound. Spent about an hour recording parts and deciding which ones were good. Another 30 minutes quantizing them manually and 30 minutes putting the bass parts into a structure. Spent another hour fiddling with volumes and fx chains and sidechains before I gave up and said it was finished. Total work time about 4 hours!

Love how rich the track gets in a matter of seconds. Great work!

I like the motions the bass goes through, though I wish the lead did something with it as well.

that snare rocks so hard.  great melody line with the doubled instruments.

This is great!

Thanks! I'm pretty sure the heavy lifting there is that overgained synth and super loud kick lolz

I can definitely feel that listening back on it. During the process my brain was looking for ways to compliment the melody line and it didnt even occur to me to develop or evolve it! Funny how the process gets you blinded sometimes :-X

Thanks! I definitely copypastad the same midi into 4 template instrument channels and just mixed the volumes and fx levels together. The stacking ended up working pretty well here. I talked briefly before about my snare technique, but its pretty simple to get great results with even some subpar samples and built in plugins. If you want to try it out:
Get two snare tracks and copy the midi pattern/timing to be the same. Let one be meaty and chunky without much reverb or anything on it except compress/eq it to be just a big fat smack sound. Make the other one nice and sharp without much thud. Put your main reverb on the crispy one (I have mine about 30/100 wet mix). Mix the two snares together with the volume faders until the snare sits nicely in the track. Dialing that reverb time knob on your crispy snare to match the tempo and the decay of the bass drum is where I made the final adjustment to really bring that ambience out. A small window into the madness of my programming style 8|
