On Tenterhooks

Hello folks! Really happy to have a distraction this year, because, well...you know. I'm really hoping I can put aside time every week to be a part of this because it always means so much to go back at the end of the year and have a pile of mostly finished tunes to listen to, or finish and release, etc. Also I really enjoy hearing everyone else's tunes! It's very inspiring.

If anyone is curious about what I've been up to musically in the last year, I completed a soundtrack for a two hour documentary called Being Japanese by Life Where I'm From (1.5 million subscribers on YT!). If you have any experience with cultural identity or mixed roots, you may find it fascinating! You can view it here for a small fee or check out some of his YouTube videos which I've also done the music for. I'm also hoping to work on my lofi hiphop project Galaxy Donuts which was doing pretty well on Spotify in 2019 but I completely dropped the ball on that one.

So what has everyone else been working on?! Look forward to hearing everyone's crunchy tunes! smile

Enjoy!

Hi Sodaybelly!!! It's fantastic to have you back another year. Your stuff is always top quality, for sure!!!

This one took me by surprise when suddenly you changed from completely acoustic to a pizzicato synth and a mechanical drum pattern, all linked by the string instruments. Unspected and really really beautiful.

I'll check that soundtrack of yours, for sure!!! Welcome back!!!

Happy new year. smile Looking forward to listening to more of your stuff again. Love the flow of this track, it just feels really good to listen to.

Welcome back! The strings on this are really impactful, and the cinematic feel is just next level.

Hmm. I am in string heaven now. Thanks

Very nice! Very happy you'll post some track again this year. You always create nice ambiance. That change of keys at about 2 mins moves me totally somewhere else.

Thanks for the track and wish you a happy new weekly beat year!

Beautiful delicate piece with some nice added drama from the strings and shift towards the end.

This is beautiful! Had to listen twice. This takes me on a journey from intrigue to careful hope and I enjoy every moment of it.

Thanks everyone! I'm happy to see everyone back this year and really looking forward to enjoying all of your music!!! smile smile

Neat arrangement! The strings really pack a punch.
Great to see you back. big_smile Looking forward to your tunes this year!

That lovely piano, those lovely strings, it's a full course meal

Nice evolution over the course of the track.  The strings sound great and tie the whole thing together really well.  Welcome back!

great minimalist tune. did you play the cello(or double bass(?)) or is that ultra-realistic multi-samples?

Happy new year, good to see you back!  Dude that's so cool about that documentary!  Sounds like a few people on here got some big commissions like that and its awesome to hear.  Anyways, good first track of the year, I enjoyed it.  Definitely a change from the stuff you were working on last year but a cool sound.  Love when the synth/grain delay(?) comes in and the piano at the end is sweet.  Looking forward to hearing more.

Ah, this is a Kontakt library called LA Scoring Strings. I've used it on a few soundtracks because it can sound pretty amazing! I used to have a violin but I was terrible at it and it would take me hours to piece together one little melody...I eventually realized that fake strings can sound more realistic than real strings and never looked back.

I'm sure my other style(s?) will make a return this year. Thanks for listening!

That’s quite amazing. I’ve never updated past the Reason Orkester Sounds sample library which sounds good in the background of a mix, but lack the detail and expression at display here. Might have to look into this as my bowing and fretless intonation is horrible too.

That being said, I imagine that you’d come up with something even more original and expressive albeit, perhaps rough, on the violin.

(Sorry for reposting – I did something wrong with the quote tag placements)

It's good to have you back! The transition from musical instruments was pretty cool. I like the thump that helps the switchover to plucks playing the melody. Great spacial atmosphere with the verb.

oh boy you make me want to learn how to do this.  this is a TERRIFIC piece!  I'm also really excited about your documentary!  My husband and I visited Japan in 2019 and are trying to slowly learn Japanese so this will be super fun to watch - the music sounded really nice in the trailer (and it looks very well shot and edited)

I went to Japan in 2019 too! Thank God I did because, well, who knows when we'll be able to get back there. I'd love to hear about your trip, and I really hope you do watch the documentary because it's a really fascinating watch -- not just because my music is in it tongue

feelin' those tenterhooks - may 2022 go gentle on you!

congratulations on all the fun projects!  that documentary project is so cool/interesting - such complex subject matter!  is this the first time you've scored a whole movie?  did you enjoy it?

i didn't write any new music on the off year but i started to put together some of the songs from 3 or 4 years of weekly recording into albums that i released as a series on band camp that followed the cross-quarter days of the year... spent some time in 2021 re-mixing the songs & learning more about finalizing albums & trying to get better at understanding that process - hoping to focus on that more w/wb2022 smile

I've done lots of short films and documentaries over the years, but this is certainly the most high-profile project I've worked on. Some projects in the past have played festivals but fade pretty fast into obscurity, whereas I know this one has a large audience and may even gain popularity over time which is cool.

I'm enjoying your Bandcamp stuff right now! It's really interesting to learn new aspects of music production other than banging on a keyboard, it's sounding good!

That's so exciting for your whole film team!  Best wishes & thank you listening!

Goodness I love the strings and piano in this! This gives such a tense but resolve feeling. Like all the pieces are starting to fit together and the person is frantically connecting the dots and making sense of it all. Phenomenal piece.
