Milk Moon Blooming

By sleepside on May 5, 2026 11:59 pm

Early submission this time, as I will be traveling this weekend. A short lullaby/ambient piece for solo DADGAD electric guitar. "Milk Moon" is one of the traditional names for the May full moon, though it's more commonly called the Flower Moon

SM58 mic recording a Fender Rumble amp, with EQD Rainbow Machine and EHX Canyon (for reverb) pedals.

Great use of a favorite tuning

The guitar sounds great.  It has a lovely tone and texture to it.  The track is soothing and does give off a nighttime feel, appropriate for a track about the moon.  I like the ring of "milk moon" but there's a nice nod to the more common name since it is blooming.

I legitimately love the Rainbow Machine, but mine must be broken because it never made anything this subtle or rewarding. Wonderful job!

DADGAD is such a cool tuning, instant idea machine.

Love all the harmonics and the sweet reverb atmospherics.

Very cool changes at the end.

I think one of my favs of yours.

Beautiful playing. There's something about adding reverb before an amp that adds a ton of character.
Never really got into DADGAD myself, but there's so much sweet emo music made in that tuning, this one included.

The only alternate guitar tunings I ever used were the wacky ones from Sonic Youth and never tried DADGAD. The tuning and pedals combo (along with your lovely playing) gives this such a dreamy quality. I also dig the imagery with the flower/milk moon. Nice work!

very chill playing. I should try alternative tuning some day. I think a younger more guitar focused version of myself would have been into it.

Thank you! DADFAE is a fun cousin of this tuning to play around with also

Thank you! I'm glad you noticed about the title. I liked the idea of putting a slightly surreal title on something gentle but a little loopy

Thank you! I do the near-unison pitch that almost everyone does with it, but I backed the primary and secondary voices all the way to 10 o'clock for this one, which I think helped with the subtlety

Thank you, that's very kind! The changes at the end were somewhat improvised as I'd tried several takes and kept getting weirder and more disconnected from the rest of the song, so this final take was me trying to simplify as much as I could

Thank you! Every so often, I am seized by the millennial need to float on a bed of ninths and suspended chords. Side note: I've never had an amp with an fx loop or built-in reverb, so reverb-before-amp is my default

Thank you! Was going for dreamy, so I'm glad that came across for you. I keep wanting to do the Sonic Youth hit-your-guitar-with-a-drumstick thing, but I haven't found the right song for it. One day

Thank you! Alt tunings are fun. From what I've heard of your music, I think you'd like a tuning where you could have a lot of drone strings, like DADGAD or an open chord tuning

Thanks for the tip. I think you might be right smile
