I was so close to having skipped this week because I'm absolutely not in the mood, and I'm tired, and all is meh.
And for some reason I've decided to make this my first M8 track ever, never having used a tracker before, with maybe six hours of noodling experience with the M8 and eight hours left to start building the track on Sunday evening.
Given all these things, it turned out pretty okay. The mix sucks, the track is somewhat clumsy and lacks variation and is just over a minute long, but hey, I did something. Also, I think I've designed all of the sounds myself, used no presets. Maybe I should have
The M8's tables are fun and I didn't find them as confusing as people would like you to think. Effects with relative numbers, the REP and RET commands as well as effects spilling into other phrases were much more challenging, I need to get used to them more. Also, AHD envelopes?! And how do I make a rising instead of a falling envelope? And the different LFO trigger settings seem to behave mostly the same. And the AMP setting does nothing for some of my sounds. And there's "Noise" and "Pitched Noise", and both are pitched. etc etc
I once called trackers "the Vim of music production", and after these last few hours with the M8 I stand by that. Which isn't a bad thing. I love Vim. It takes time to get used to it and learn to deal with its pitfalls, but once you become familiar with it you can do awesome things. Seems to me like that's true for the M8 as well.
