Back 2 Jack

Simple, and perhaps crude club stomper. Heavy kick, some filtered guitar bits and bass. Messed around with the drums & perc layering but came together pretty quickly. I tend not to get caught up too much in fiddling with the mix and sound design, if it sounds about right I'll go with that.

Ambiance in a 4/4 kicker track works well. I can't really hear what the background pad is, is it a sample from something?

Great mix, did you use sidechain compression?  The kick really blasts through nicely.

Thanks, yes side chained it, but I've also changed the sampler. This is a bit geeky but apparently different samplers handle the initial transient differently (yep, who knew) which for kick is a big deal. So Impulse in Ableton (used here) is better then Drum Rack and sampler which opens a bit later and miss some of the initial transient. Is this technically true? No idea but since I switched to using Impulse (I've consistently used sidechain) the kick is performing better.

Thanks, I've used a couple of pieces for the pads, one is a sample in sampler which plays a fx stab with ping pong delay, the other is a default Ableton Simpler patch

Whoa you are blowing my mind if that is true.  I'll have to experiment.

Here's the link to the article https://www.f9-audio.com/blogs/tutorials/f9-free-production-kick-drums
and the direct quote where he talks about the samplers is "• Not all samplers are equal - The best way to use these is drop them as audio files onto your page ( and turn all warping off, obviously ) .. if you are using sampler VSTs or in built ones remember that only a few sampler engines are built for transient / drum work - Machine , MPC and Battery are the very best - kontakt is good too , but place it in ‘perfect ‘ mode , if you are in logic use Ultrabeat / Drum designer over EXS 24 , If in ableton use impulse over drum racks or simpler/sampler . I don't know as much about over DAWs but basically if you have a device that meant for drums only then use it instead of multipurpose samplers ."
