A Modest Country Proposal

By roboctopus on February 5, 2012 7:39 pm

I started out the week working on an Gameboy + guitar track, then halfway through the week it just wasn't working out, so I decided to do a country-tinged ballad and wrote some half-assed lyrics about meth.  So...yeah.

I'm not much of a singer.  You've been warned.

I had a lot of fun with this though.  I like abrupt transitions, and I think they work in this song.  I tried to make each section of the song unique in some way.  To save time, rhythm guitar, tambourine, and main vocals were recorded in one take (tapping my foot on the tambo to keep time.) It's all a bit sloppy, but I guess that's okay.

I don't know much about mastering, so forgive me if the sound is bad...

For the gear lovers:

All guitar parts are on my '65 Harmony Bobkat
Organ sound is a Roland Juno 60
Bass is a Fender Jaguar bass
Banjo is a pretty terrible, super cheap Rogue 6-string banjo
Kick drum is from a Zoom SampleTrak

From gameboy to folky meth in one week! I like where your mishaps take you.  Excellent vocals as well!

Your abrupt transitions indeed work. This is quite a relaxing piece. And your voice is fine! (Fits this piece very well.)

Not usually a fan of this style, but you pulled it off pretty well. Good job man.

Good chill out folk song ^^
Very different from Chip Music but sound very well!
It lack a bit of mastering indeed, but that's still all right!!

This is really good - reminds me a little of Jim O'Rourke and Beck's folky stuff.

This is great!

Well done man. Great song structure and everything. Really like it!

Whoa didn't expect that. great work and that tone is sweet

Haha this is awesome.

bahahahahah oh gawd, this song makes me feel really good about country music

This is the only country song I will ever listen to more than once.

Sick tune man!

if you peeps swing by his soundcloud page you can hear his other indie/vocal stuff. it's awesome. THIS is awesome as well. more please :3

'65 Harmony Bobkat  :-o  So sweet.  I wish we could get those kinds of guitars here :-/  (so expensive)  Super pumped someone else has a Zoom SampleTrak!!  Pulled off well.

Ha, really had a smile on face throughout this track.  Yeah, the abrupt changes work great.  I miss the organ sound from the Juno 60 I once had...

This is really awesome.

Wow. The talent in this group...

Wow, did not expect this much of a positive response to this. Thanks guys.

I don't actually listen to much country/folk/bluegrass, haha.  I do lots of meth and burn down houses though.

This was very enjoyable to listen to.  Well produced and arranged smile

sooooo good!

first line is so suggestive wink

Your voice goes with the song perfectly and isn't abrasive. Its recorded well and sounds much better than most of the other voice stuff on weeklybeats.
