WB3: Iken

I worked this one backwards, starting by defining the overall structure and then finding sounds that fit. Made it easier in some ways -- the big picture was set, I didn't have to worry that I wouldn't find the right form.

That's a great way to work. I'm doing that somewhat this week as well. I do find that when using placeholder sounds that "what is temporary, becomes permanent" happens sometimes.

As for this track, I love the atmosphere. Feels futuristic or sci-fi, in the sense that it would feel at home in a score for a film, game or other media for those genres.

I particularly enjoyed the formant-like filter modulation on the earlier synths, that are supported by what to me sounds like actual sampled voices pitched up/down.

Embracing space and sparseness is something I struggle with, as a bit of a maximalist, it's nice to see a piece doing so much within less space. Great work.

This is amazing!

Yep, voice sample played at a wide range of speeds/pitches, along with six to ten other samples. The predetermined structure was important to keeping the space open: there are only a certain number of note-events, spaced out at a specific timing.  Once that's set, I didn't mess with it.
