Pray and Obey

By rdomain on June 12, 2022 12:03 pm

Ok, well I killed my Macbook Pro this week by spilling water on it so I've had to try and get this song edited, mixed and uploaded on a half broken Chromebook.  Definitely a chore! Final mixing was much more simplistic than usual so apologies if not the usual standard.

This is a movement from a rehearsal I did today for an upcoming theatre show.

I pray for you, that your macbook content will be saved. this theater show will be a quiet one, I guess.

RIP Macbook, I hope the repair/recovery of data won't be too terribly expensive! The tune almost sounds like a send off for the macbook, haha.

Despite the challenges, I think this turned out great! The opening sounds like the atmospheric, tension building part of a sci-fi movie.

Sorry to hear about the MacBook! Glad to hear you have something half-broken to keep you afloat for the time being.

[Aside first: this has been a weird run of technology failing WBers, I think the week prior to this I had an SD card die and then several people posted about computer failures / devices being sent for repairs -- it's kind of weird how much synchronicity I seem to observe in WB, or maybe it's just my stupid lizard brain seeking patterns everywhere.]

More musings about soundtracks: there's a video game called Disco Elysium, it's relatively recent and wonderful, but the soundtrack is the topic -- among other things, one of the most understated things ever, in spite of overwhelming praise for the music. There's kind of a synth/brass cue in the game that seems to not do anything interesting by itself, but because it plays every time you're in a particular location (that happens to be where you're staying, so it marks every day in the game), it sort of becomes engrained in your consciousness through sheer assertion of itself. Every YouTube essay about the game mentions this sound and obviously cares about it enough to mention it.

What strikes me about this is that there's a certain "orchestra tuning" type effect to the emergence of the tones in this -- without the actual cliche part of an orchestra tuning. Instead, the "tuning" becomes a simple, two-note repeating motif. Crossing fingers that this is an idée-fixe re-emerging during the play, simply because it sounds like it can be. heart

(Reiterating it would be amazing to see this work in context.)

I'm vigilant with backing up so all ok there.  I finally have a new machine and have restored a heap of software/files etc.  The theatre show was all hardware fortunately.  Hardware for the win!

Haha... I like it.  Yes indeed!  I've recovered all my data via backups which is great.  The laptop is dead and the new one was super expensive but crazy powerful. Hopefully some insurance will cover the cost.

Ah, thanks! Being able to listen to it now in the studio with the new machine, I'm glad to hear it sounded all ok!

Just!  Haha.  New machine is all up and running.  It's a killer machine!  So some good out of it with a forced upgrade. smile

Thanks again!  Yes, simplicity can definitely be best and these sections of the play are an improvised 2 note thing.  Played freely to suit the dialogue.  This tone definitely comes back in various scenes yet the harmony will change if hope starts to pop it's head out in the story. smile

ps.  Trying to getting around to listening etc to everyone again.  Getting there. smile
Still busy though.  I just did the theatre show, I have a film score to wrap up and I've just been commissioned to create sound for an art installation.  Soon after, I have to lay down bass parts for a band I'm in that's recording an album.  Phew!  Holidays in a couple of weeks so more spare time at least.  smile
