Black Hole Precipice

By rdomain on January 14, 2024 10:09 am

Firstly, thank you for all the amazing feedback last week.  Really appreciated.  If I haven't left feedback on your song yet, I will be doing that soon. smile

Another song with 'black' in the title.

This is a one take performance on the modular synth with final mixing ITB.  Another track was then recorded using the Lyra 8/ Sherman Filterbank/ H9 Ultra as a solo instrument which you can hear early in the piece.  All hardware.

If you'd like to see this in action, check this link and feel free to follow and comment to help feed those terrible IG algorithms.

Thanks!

While listening to this track, I was wondering how you were able to create such a sense of large space. It feels like it's the appropriate usage of reverb in an intentional way, along with some delays is really effective in this track. "use reverb and delay to create space" sounds like 101 of music, but the real challenge is how to use appropriately and effectively, and this track is a great demonstration. As usual, awesome sound texture - the long pads, percussive elements and glitchy explosions. Loved it.

Nice, I like this a lot.  The distortion on the beats towards the end makes this rivethead pretty happy

Thanks!  Yes, I love reverb in particular but it gets abused way too much where everything is just drenched and it gets tiring/uneventful so yes; deliberate space (no reverb) is created in the mix which allows the music to breathe instead of drowning in reverb.  smile  But you still get to utilise reverb creatively.  Yay!

Awesome.  I'm glad Rivethead approves.  Cheers!

Love hearing the Lyra8 played/used this way, quite haunting, and the distortion on thr percussion is deliciously meaty. Gave me the chills!

Dark.  Some great atmospheres in here.

Ah thanks!  Yeah, it's a whole different thing when performing on big systems.  Lots of fun. \m/

Very nice evolving textures.

Really cool spacey atmosphere; kinda gave me

hit enter too soon neutral

...Hans Zimmer Blade Runner 2049 vibes!

The only thing this song is missing is a cinematographer and a gripping thriller about the future.

I wouldn’t hesitate to call this black ambient music. It can’t be darker. Perfect.

Thanks everyone for the listen and comments.  Appreciated!

Great performance, really tells a story! Impressive that it's done on modular! Sounds dark and ominous but def clear and spacey sound wise.

Thanks!  I was definitely going for clarity in the mix even though it's full of textures etc.  Modular synths can do such a vast variety. Long time user here!  smile

Oooh the sherman filterbank was always this mythical magical looking piece of gear to me.  Never had the opportunity to see/hear one being used in person but i've always thought it was cool when I heard it being mentioned by electronic bands from the late 90s. Always a fan of your music for a blackened theater.  Dark crunching squelchy goodness.  Especially right at 1:45 the synth sounds like it's breathing.  Well done!

Thanks for the kind words and glad you enjoyed the track!  I've always wanted a Sherman Filterbank and even tried one out and nearly bought one years ago but I finally bought one only last year.  It can add a subtle bit of grit/girth/movement to the mix or you can decimate it if you so desire.  This is obviously on the subtle side.  It takes a while to learn but once you know how to use it well, it can definitely add that bit of magic.   Or destruction.  \m/

Foly huck, man

Did I already tell you your stuff sounds like a soundtrack to something amazing?  (checks last week’s comments). Yes.  Yes, I did.  Good.  That still applies.  The sound design and dark mood is incredible.  I’m picturing something like Beyond the Black Rainbow except with a plot that holds up all the way through and matches the gravitas of the soundtrack, which would be this, so it had better be pretty good.

The texture master! Another great atmosperic piece!!! Cant wait till next week.

Cinematic and evocative, awesome space and texture. Feels like walking down down some dark corridors, different mysteries and discoveries around every bend. I like how kicks and percussion comes in and out vs. steady throughout.

wow I love that you did this live - way to make a cohesive track with a beginning middle & end. and love the dark melty vibes again.

really enjoyed this. such a confident use of rhythm. the evolving atmosphere and space was a delight. favorited

This is rad! Love it

Haha, excellent.  Thanks heaps!  I would love to do more horror film scores.  They're usually the most fun ones.  big_smile

Awesome.  I love how people really visualise things when they hear the music.  Cheers!

I love the performative aspect of modular synthesis.  Everything is happening in realtime.  Electricity bouncing around and controlling things.  An organic machine.  Cheers.  smile

Thanks man!  Glad you dug it.

love the juxtaposition of the "light" drum beat vs. the heavy drones

the beat is the melody and the melody is the beat

Love that concept actually.  I know what you're hearing though to think of that.  Cheers!

The drone/bass/lead textures pull me in. The last 1/4 is my favorite.
