The No Beat Challenge

By RawTicks on February 15, 2014 6:27 pm

Failed.

I intended to do a track without beat to work on melody only. Then I lost my focus.
I'm not exactly sure what's happening here, I feel a little bit confused about the whole track TBH. At first it was supposed to have different melodic parts, then it became kind of a collage of unrelated things assembled together in Live. The synths are Analog 4, the voice is a sample I found in a sound bank and the beat is a sliced break that I mangled with automation and random LFOs of some Live FX parameters.

I think that the mix could use a little tweaking. It's a bit too busy in the mid frequencies. Definitely have to work on that in the coming weeks.

I like the synth melody. Fun beat fx!

nice mangling! Doing without the drums would be a pitty! Very well done.

I think we are most critical of our own tracks, so I def understand but I disagree on the "failed" part.  The beat gives the track a whole new feel and the melody itself a sort of time to reflect.  I liked how that voice was used.  It was like little fairies singing to me (yes I'm sober atm) smile  I liked it! no_fail

This would be super fun to sing on. I only listened on my computer speakers, but nothing sounded off in the frequency department to me! Great work RawTicks.

Cheers everyone for the comments. Still, next week is looking more interesting for me!

You failed dismally!  on not doing cool beats.  smile

I dig it. Cool vibe and I like the vocal sample. smile

Ha the beat is great!

I think it's my fave track from week 7 so far.

Reminds me of Plone a lot - great stuff

Favourited! Mad stuff, I love the open/free feeling that withdrawing a drum beat has.

Keep on with the No Beat Challenge! The resulting beat is sick and beautiful!

Thanks everybody for your kind comments. I'm glad that you liked the track!

The midsection with the vocally-bit is truly haunting - I love how the beat comes in and acts quite playful in the midst of the creepy chord bed. This is a gorgeous track!
