Calm Storm

Well it's one of those weeks...
I experimented with many things but nothing seemed to work out like I wanted, and I kept trying harder and everything felt forced at some point. It started out as a glitch fest, then it became an acid house track, then it evolved into what would be the "leit motiv" for this track. Seeing as everything I did was not working, I took a 3 days break in the middle of the week and finished it on Sunday. It is a bit short and the parts evolve in a weird way. I still like it though, but I hope to be able to focus better next week!

Wow! Makes me think of some of the better Loops Haunt tracks smile

I had the same experience with one of my tunes a few weeks back - it just seemed to haunt me and defy structuring until it felt good and ready to let me! 'Patchwork' is a nice way to describe this - loads of evocative and tense moments leading up to that sickly-oscillating theme...great stuff!

This is cool stuff!! I had a similar back and forth and up and down with my track this week. Unfortunately, it did not lead to anything that I liked, so I have not uploaded anything. But I think you have overcome that creative down and made a really nice track!

I really suffered hard this week under similar conditions! Sometimes it's fascinating yet also a pain in the ass when a songs develops into different directions and you're unable to find a clear direction. A pause often helps, but sometimes it's not ment to be. At least it's always a good practice and gratification to sit down and "work", no matter what's the outcome. But nevertheless, great track! smile

It definitely is interesting to read everyone's weekly experiences with writing tracks.  I procrastinate so much that I don't give myself much time to dwell on the current track, but when I do hit a point of "wtf!" some sort of break always seems to help.  Whether it be a walk outside or a day or two, fresh ears somehow springs forth new ideas or a new approach at what you're working on.  Now that I've babbled a novel, this track has a nice intro and very haunting feel.  I like when the pads go into that chord progression midway.  The underlying beat is really cool too.  I'm a bit caffeinated now but, the chord progression kinda reminded me of "time after time".  Just a bit smile  Well done!

Love how this evolves and then that detuned melody arrives - also very cool to hear the lineage of the tracks evolution smile

Very cool piece! Excellent textures morphing in and out. I really dig that detuned sounding synth.

Trippy dude! Really love when the beat kicks in and then it slowly fades out.

I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one strugling sometimes (and I feel for you at the same time).

Since we only have a week to produce a song (which is a very short time for me) I feel a bit stressed out when I don't have something shaping up by wednesday or so... But in 11 weeks, that wasn't my first time it happened and in my case the 3 days break last week did me good. I came back knowing that it wouldn't be what I wanted, that I just had to finish it and start the next one. I need to put in my brain the thought and understanding that it won't be a hit every week (meaning I might not be entirely satisfied with the results every time). The one I'm working on for week 12 started out in a way I'm not used to, but I decided to go with the flow and see where it gets me. So far it has been rewarding.

Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts and for the comments!

Cheers for sharing your thoughts on this RawTicks! We are all bound to learn something quite interesting about our relationship to creativity and being organised. I think perhaps the most important thing we might learn is to honour the process, the starting from scratch, and the empty page. Even though we are generating a 'finished product' of sorts every week, it is really just the tangible evidence that we are all making an effort to engage in the process of creation each week - that's what we are sharing! Wonderful sounds, to be sure, but mainly the proof that we are all in this together trying to do something new.

Looking forward to hearing where your flow for the week leads you big_smile

Very interesting journey! I wonder how the acid track would have sounded??

Haha! It was ok but at some point I flushed it out, trying to focus on one thing. It was a 4 on the floor kick (which I almost never do) with sound textures and some cut x0x on slammed on top of it. I might take the x0x recordings in an future track, we'll see...

It's short and sweet, but I like the atmosphere on this.  There are some really cool textures to dig into.  I know personally sometimes when things don't end up how I initially envisioned them, it can be for the better.

I like it!  I really dig all the glitchy tones splurting away.  Sounds like a bunch of underground creatures foraging.  The detuned progression adds another dimension to the piece too.  Ties it together nicely.

Yeah really liked this would be super interested to hear about how you go about doing some of these great sound designs. Especially the alien sounds they could have come for a sci fi movie.

Thanks for the comment. The alien sounds mostly come from using granular synthesis, with an electronic beat as a sound source if I remember correctly. I use Granite but there are other cheaper solutions out there, like The Mangle...
