I used Reason and piano samples for this track. I treated the piano like 6 separate instruments, so each has its own track and panning. Its mainly 5 layers and 1 bass line, but all the material is derived from a single motive. The phasing effect is caused by using an additive and subtractive process for each layer (similar to something like Messiaen or Ligeti). This could easily be prepared for a live performance or recording session, but as you know, one week or less isn't much time to get that set up.
