Verse 1
Since Danny boy was young he yearned for the sea
Not bats and balls, twas the ships that called to he
Ever since he stole the Volvo he was bound for piracy
And once he tasted sailor rum Dan became Monty
Chorus
Yo Ho raise your glass
The rogue has gone to shore
For the lad we knew as Monty
isn’t Monty anymore
Verse 2
So he sailed to reach the campus green, skipped class for rum and mutiny
He joined a band of brothers
Down on 42nd street
He’d take no chain and kiss no crown
From his dark lair in cedar house
His friends walked upon the planks he pressed
To PJ’s and the edge
Chorus
Yo Ho raise your glass
The rogue has gone to shore
For the lad we knew as Monty
isn’t Monty anymore
Verse 3
He’s always been a Rebel since his days in South Caroline
And he collected his degree once he finally found the time
He moved back to Hampton roads to find a new lair by the sea
He’s the youngest at the yacht club, average age is 63
(Interlude)
Next, he filled his lair with grandmas plundered treasures old
And bought a 97’ Escalade with ac never cold
He did an Ironman quest but he never ran his boat
Monty boy where did you go?
Check your chart now oh, where is Monty loose?
On a Saturday it seems he’s working down in Newport News?
Just another day of work for him his work is never done
From one project to another and another other one
Pre-Chorus
Fare thee well old Monty lad
The rogue of Hampton Bay
We buried him off Marker Twenty
As Maggie hauled Dan away
Chorus
Yo Ho toll the bell
Another pirates done
Old Monty met a navy girl
and now the bastard’s gone
Yo Ho raise your glass
The rogue has found his shore
For the lad we knew as Monty
isn’t Monty anymore
‹ idea and narrative
It my friend dans bachelor party this weekend and we are going Yachting in Annapolis. We want to write him a sea shanty. The general idea is to follow the arc of his life in the verses, and then we need to come up with a hook. I think I want to lean into the most pirate like elements of his life. It’s fully summarized below, but notable ones are
- Marker 20, the local nautical dive tavern
- Actual sailing, yachting, coach life
- The edge as a dive / haunt. Cedar house as the pirates lair
- His house full of grandmas plundered treasures
- Barnacled beat up rides
- Brotherhood pirate crew
- Mythic quests for ironman
- Walked the planks (longboards)
- Lassies on the Rebel
- That lass Maggie is the girl for him
His nickname was Monty
Humor elements we must include
- Escalade with no AC
- runs Ironmans but can’t finish a bathroom, sailboat engine doesn’t run etc his boat is Jacqueline Seay
- rebel
- glorifying marker 20 which is a nautical salty bar but it’s a bit underwhelming for nightlife in reality
- always at work works crazy hours at the shipyard. If you check his location on Saturday he might be there
- eager to sign up for projects he doesn’t have time for
- edge and pjs as haunts, cedar house as lair
- youngest person at the Hampton yacht club where the average age is like 65
We could also lean into the common arcs of the sea shanties like “times got tough and the jobs dried up so I became a pirate”
+ much more edited ideation omitted here
