Milk (2012)

An example of minimalism/process music/additive synthesis in the vein of Alvin Lucier's 1970 work for voice, microphone, two taperecorders, amplifier and loudspeaker [url=http://www.lovely.com/titles/cd1013.html/]'I Am Sitting in a Room.'

The work was realised across a combination of Pro Tools v.10, QuickTime and SuperCollider (in 45-minutes or thereabouts). Three takes were done and outcomes varied greatly depending on yield (wait) time in between iterations. The aim of the exercise was to reach a point of sonic illegibility, however, around the 150th iteration of the recorded phrase it became clear that a plateau had been reached and the desired outcome/effect was unlikely to be achieved (which I guess in a way, means the work has stayed true to its title, "it still tastes like milk, so...").

always interesting to see how the resonance comes out in these experiments, but it also reveals artifacts in the particular recording method. can you elaborate on how supercollider was used? and how you edited down the iterations?

also, great track

George, I don't understand what you mean by 'edited down the iterations', sorry. A vocal line was recorded in QuickTime, edited in PTs and then uploaded into and played back using SC (over and over). I'd upload the code but it's a hack job, so... sad(

P.S. Agreed re resonance and artefacts in the recording method (this proved more interesting to me than the actual track, ultimately).

It's interesting the artefacts that came to the surface compared to Alvin Lucier's recording (for obvious reasons).

Cooooool

its a good thing no one in here is lactone intolerant!!

...sorry for the pun, I am a real boob...

..im just milking it now...

but this track is tasty.

LOLs.

v.coooooool.
Agreed with the resonance. and I like the

Hah, this is fantastic! Have you seen the video that a guy did on youtube, same principle, as a kind of tribute to Lucier? He uploaded and downloaded the video however many times, to observe how the compression affected both the video and the audio. Really interesting stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icruGcSsPp0
