The Even Newer Sounds of Nintendo Radio

By Pop Tronics on March 23, 2024 3:32 am

All sound were generated from an original 1989 Nintendo Gameboy.

Earlier this week I got an Arduinoboy and mGB cartridge from a seller of Etsy. I was super excited as I've had this Nintendo Gameboy for a really long time. Until this week it was primarily used for Tetris and Dr Mario. Needless to say I was excited to receive it in the mail.

Unfortunately I was unable to experiment with it most of the week. Finally on Friday evening I got a chance to play around with it. This is the product of my initial go at it.

At first I was trying to use the EP-133 KOii to control it. Mostly because I thought they looked cool together. I quickly pivoted to the Synthstrom Deluge as the controller. I really like the piano roll and ability to easily play arpeggios on the Deluge. It really lent itself well to working with the Gameboy.

I had a lot of fun putting this together. I'm going to look into getting some other music creation cartridges for the Gameboy. I'd also mod the Gameboy to have a backlit screen for easier use. All that being said, I doubt I'll do too many songs with only tones from the Gameboy. It seems like something that will be more fun to incorporate here and there.

Anyway... Enjoy

How many bits is too many?
Wish I had a Deluge.

Maybe anything beyond 16 bits, but I'm no expert on chiptunes.

I wish I used my Deluge as much now as when I got it. I was obsessed until I got the 404 MKii. It has proven to be the best way for me to work with the arduinoboy.
