This beat was inspired by a rapper I met at the gym.
He had come up in this era where Drake is the biggest artist of the generation and so I could hear Drake’s influence in the style, flow and delivery; which is unusual when compared to the other male vocal talents I have bumped into in London.
I built the core theme using Indian vocal samples to to attempt to acknowledge this artists heritage; while also drawing influence from the commercial and popular 808 heavy productions coming out of LA and Atlanta. I was quite proud at achieving the distinctive sound of the intro synth; and I didn’t even have to sip any “lean” to do it. I am unfamiliar with the inner workings of the weapons of choice within this genre - Omnisphere and the like; but I was pleased with the results I got from tweaking a few patches I made using Ableton stock stuff, and my go to synth: Serum.
Overall - I’m happy with the vibe; and the production and the flow of the 808’s and high hats; and I might follow up with the MC that inspired it; or maybe play it to some others - but right now; I’m enjoying making music for my own reasons and in relative solitude - it enables me to explore whatever thing I am curious about; without feeling like I need to curate a perfect portfolio to impress anyone with. But I’m usually happy to share when the time comes and the mood takes me.
I made a collage to accompany the piece; and you can see and hear it on youtube:
