phliip - say niz

By phliip on September 13, 2020 1:29 pm

here's some grimey legitness from the mean streets of London.

the term "say niz" means say no more; and it was taught to me by someone who had grown up on the wrong side of the tracks. They are a pretty cool person; and they got pretty deep about some of the stuff they did in their previous life... robbing old ladies, credit card fraud, living in mortal fear of retribution from rival gangs, and having to keep their stash between their buttocks at times...

It was a crazy story...

and it was almost incomprehensible to think of the things the well mannered and generally good natured person I was speaking to now had gone through in a previous life. They are religious now, and find meaning in praying often, going to the gym and trying to do right by their family.

I think it's a tremendous act of courage to have pulled themselves out of the life they were living, and a real act of humility to leave behind the lucrative drug trade; to have a fairly normal minimum wage job. But I'm really happy they made those sacrifices and are on a different path now...

it really makes me wonder about people's life experiences and how we can all live in a city together and yet all experience such different things...

I hope you enjoy the track... I might find a grime mc to tell us about some of the mishaps in their life; or weave a narrative that gives us insight into their world...

but those things are sometimes too much for me. I love the instrumentals tho; of every flavour of hip hop; I love that form of production; and I love the rhythm of it. I also like the idea that these pieces emerge from the nooks and crannies of every city in the world; and every one has their own flavour.

I haven't really had a go at producing drill or grime; but I do love those gliding 808's and tantalising percussion; so I think I might explore those... hopefully without going too deep into the underworld...

Hope you good wherever you are

XxX

It reminds me a little of Death Grips for some reason. Very cool track, it has this dark threatening vibe.

Skeleton: "Say niz."
Other Skeleton: "Niz."
Skeleton: ".............please leave."

This is a great grime feel track - and I loved your story.  Really proud of your acquaintance for turning things around.  I never did anything like that, but I've gone through a pretty big "turnaround" in my life and trying to work really hard on art is a big thing for me.  This is my "gym"

hugs

Hahaha!! dem skeletons...

Yo!! I'm proud of you too man!! Well done... The main reason for me getting clean and sober is that I need those brain cells to do sound design... I just couldn't have done my first year of weekly beats without that...

Whatever your motivation, keep on that upward path...

I'm really busy at the moment, but I'm planning to address ur sound design question, and give your weekly beats a proper good stalking!! :-)

Stay Awesome!!

Excellent story and beat.  I like those lil plucky synths in between the big ass bass.  Noice!
