MAINTAIN

This week's song started out with the ukulele. I started just recording the uke and didn't use a metronome, so once I loaded the recording onto the M8, of course the strumming did not stay on the beats. So, being lazy, I tried to make it work anyway, by adding delays. It was going OK, but I eventually realised I needed to re-record the uke part. So, to save work, I played the uke part to match exactly what I had made while trying to work with the first uke part ... again lazy, right?

Anyway, throughout the whole process I was having issues getting the rest of the song to match the uke part, thinking, "next time, I'll use a metronome from the start" and the would make everything better. Then, suddenly, I realised the actual issue: the uke part was was in 3/4 time ... and I was using a 4/4 groove on the M8! I never even thought about it, I just liked the way it sounded! So, being lazy, I just left it all and made it work.

So this will help you to understand the loose time feeling in this one and why I ended up with such a non-standard hihat line. I kinda like the result actually.

Also, this song features some synth parts from my Hydrasynth Explorer that arrived mid-week. I'm really liking the long envelopes and the poly aftertouch ... and having some actual keys to help with composing. I recorded the Hydra directly into the M8 as samples, which worked quite well.

Thanks for listening and maybe reading! If you have any feedback or advice, let me know! I'm a novice at this so it all helps!

Happy accidents...

I like those unusual hats. Nice pads over the Ukulele. It is ok to be lazy... I always ask myself, will it be easier to fix it or to record again that part, and I work mostly within DAW so it is not that bad to stretch audio - cut paste things around.

You guys using little trackers are another kind of breed. I don't quite understand the workflows of those, but it seems to be a fun approach to compose as well.

Very lush and elegant beat. Really like the ukulele and hihats, it adds something very organic to the track

Love the sound of the uke and the rhythm from the strums it creates.  Feels like I'm taking a scenic tour on a gondola.  Very organic sound throughout.  Well done!

Thank you! I felt the pads added a lots too. My favourite part of the tracker workflow is the "sitting on the couch" portability ... it just makes it so I am much more likely to try making some music. Although, as I get more into it, I can see the appeal of a DAW for more control.

Thank you! I like the hat too and the uke is just a fun way to get started with a track.

Thank you! I like to grab a "real" instrument fairly often to get my body into the music more. I agree it gives a much more organic feel to everything ... stay tuned for my accordion one of these weeks! wink
