BAT SIGNAL

By PeterM on April 21, 2024 10:47 pm

This is a "just get something out" kinda week.

As a starting point, I used some vocal samples from a podcast I listen to called "The Great Simplification" with Nate Hagens about the human predicament. It's a very interesting show, if anyone is into big picture thinking and how everything ties together for our civilisation. He calls it a "bat signal" that he is sending out for concerned people to see (hear) and show up to listen.

Beyond that, I just tried to add some interesting bleeps and bloops to dress that up. The bass synth is something I sampled from my Hydrasynth in a previous week, but never ended up using. The kick is a sample. The rest is internal M8 synths.

One more week down! Thanks for listening.

Oooohhhh interesting! I like this! Cool use of chopped vocals! Also, how are you liking the hydra synth? I've been contemplating the possibility of grabbing one, but given how infrequently I use my S-1, I don't think new gear is something I really need.

Thanks, I think I could have been a bit more creative the with voice samples, but just had no time left by the time I got to them.

The Hydrasynth is great. I have the Explorer version and I like having a keyboard to noodle on to find ideas. I've been mainly using presets so far because I usually end up pouring hours into fiddling with sound design whenever I go down that route. I love fiddling, but not when I need to be productive!

One down side, if you can call it that, is that it opens up so many more sound possibilities that sometimes I find it makes creating songs more difficult. I should probably pair down the presets to remove the ones I don't think I'd ever use. When I was just using the M8, I ended up being engaged more since everything was right there in my hands all the time. So switching to the Hydrasynth kinda interrupts the flow a bit.

But I do like that the Hydrasynth has a ton of sound design capability, so I'm hoping I can grow into it as I keep (hopefully!) making music in the future.
