Washed Up

Music is where you find it. Also, I think this is the closest to "dance music" as I've ever been.

I was in the studio last week, and a load of laundry was going in the other room. I suddenly noticed that it had a pretty good beat. I recorded a few minutes of it, and this track popped out in short order. It was nice to do something fast after beating my head against last week's track.

I like to try and experiment with something new in each track - in this case, it was using Logic's adaptive tempo. I didn't beat mach the washing machine sound, but rather allowed the project tempo to flow with it while keeping all my midi locked to the grid. I've noticed that in Gary Numan's work before - that the electronic music is more organic because it isn't locked to a click.

I also played around with the Remix multi effect. I've been wanting to try it out, and man is it fun. It's a lot like a strong spice in cooking - a little goes a long way - but man does it inject energy into a track.

Sequenced in Logic Pro
Samples from "The Last Word in Automatic Dishwashing", public domain (I thought it went with the washing machine well).
TD3 - RD6 - 2600 - Logic software drummer and bass

High-energy, dancy, chonky sounds, instantly head-bobbable, slightly funky. At first listen, this track is ticking all the boxes!

Nice! Has a bit of silliness to it that I enjoy in my music

Very fresh sound from the start! Your comments prepared me for something wildly off-tempo that my ears did not detect on my laptop speakers (or maybe it's that background shushing sound? Largely ducked on these lil bleepers) Anyhow I loved! Seeing Gary Numan in a few weeks, so inspiring that he's still touring around in his old age smile

Dang, thank you! I think the funkiness is coming from the washing machine beat - it feels like James Brown. "Get up offa that thing!"

Hahn thanks. I decided to embrace the inherent goofiness in this track. It was fun.

I may have upsold the tempo variance a bit - it swings from 150 – 158 over the course of the song. Probably not enough to be noticeable, but more than I've ever had in electronic music before!

Jealous of Numan! He's near me soon as an opener for Ministry, but I'm holding out to see him as a headliner...I've seen ministry before smile

Yeah, that's my fear...nothing is certain in life, and there's no telling if he'll come back again this way. I should go...and anyway, Front Line Assembly is playing, too!

Numan was last night...drove a little under four hours round trip for his hour long set. Had to go to work this morning, coming off Daylight savings.

WORTH EVERY MINUTE.

What an amazing performer. Fantastic set, and hearing My Name is Ruin live made my year.

Hooray!!!! Yes indeed, he puts on an excellent show and his bass and guitar players are adorable! So glad you made it ouT!!

I don't know what part of this is the actual washing machine, if it's there at all, but the beat sure is clean.

Thanks! And the washing machine is in the entire song...it's the percussive raspy sound. The very beginning of the song is just drum and the (heavily filtered) washing machine recording.

That's a funky washing machine then, I'll just assume it's what it's supposed to sounds like.

HEAVILY filtered smile I was more than a little shocked at how funky it came out after I applied the multi-effect. (The dry recording is at the very end).
