How about some melodic death/doom metal? Or at least those genres as interpreted by a frog.

Started out the week thinking about trying something like Rammstein, which quickly went nowhere (not for lack of trying). Ideas clicked a bit more listening to Judas Priest at work on Friday with that dual lead sound, and also thinking about Saturnus (the one doom band I like). I got the idea for the intro, and the track built from there. It all came together Friday night, with final tweaks happening late late Saturday. I consider it to be doom flavored, as there's stuff going on in here that isn't particularly doom or death.

The piano part is actually a Logic session player. It got me about 80% of what I was hoping for, so that's a win. For some reason it isn't possible to set sustain in the player itself, so I converted to MIDI and adjusted from there (along with a couple of odd notes).

I was stuck for a title, and also was still thinking about lyrics somehow. I wasn't in the mode to write anything, and thought some poetry might be a nice fit over the break in the middle. If you're talking doom, death and depression, you're talking Emily Dickinson. I'm not overly familiar with her work, so I googled "Emily Dickinson depression poem". This was the first hit. Sorta perfect, and got me a nifty title as well. Thanks, Emily.

If she were alive today, Emily Dickinson would be a doom metal artist.

I had to google to see if Melodic Doom was a genre yet.  Really liked this, got strong feelings of My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost with the piano and the Dickinson poem was perfect.  I'm very impressed with your versatility, week on week it's become a fun surprise to see what you'll be working in.

This is fantastic. Slow and plodding. Great guitar tone and harmony and so fucking clean. Everything sits perfectly in the mix and the spoken word is perfect. This is extremely inspiring, thank you.

That was pretty rad, bro. I feel like it came right out of the soundtrack for The Crow or something. Definitely a very evocative emotional quality.

Those long prelude solos in the first two minutes are totally a Metalocalypse moment. When do you perform with the London Symphony Orchestra again? I need to get my tickets.

And I mean the Emily Dickinson is just awesome. She would be a doom metal queen.

Ooof, this is dark and gets pretty damn big. Those synths really bring something to the sound. Really like the use of the spoken word sample in the middle, works really well. Solid riffs for a slow headbang and cool end section, I did not see coming!

Heck yeah the ending - amazing. Also - Emily Dickinson! Love it.

I've jumped around genres ever since I started writing and recording, but have always seen it as a negative....I've wondered how some artists are able to have a 20 year career and maintain a similar sound! It's always frustrated the hell out of me, but this year I've decided to really lean into who I am musically....and the WB community has been a huge encouragement for me to do that.

Thanks! I did some AGGRESSIVE eq work to carve out the sound. First time notching the bass for the kick and using parallel compression on the drums. I'm happy with the results smile

Oh man, that's some high praise - thank you.  the movie and both soundtrack albums are baked into my musical DNA. No lie, I was listening to it earlier in the week when I was trying to figure what to do. I was considering the style of Thrill Kill Cult and Machines of Loving Grace. smile

Thank you so much. I'm not used to writing such long pieces....I had to tell myself it was OK that I was at two minutes and the first theme was still developing smile

Thanks! I was totally flipping out when I did the first read and found that it fit in the space I already had. It was fun to time the read for greatest dramatic impact smile

Wow, that first drum kick shook my bones… in a good way.  Awesome mix with lots of nuance and killer synths.  The piano fits really well in that pocket and adding the voice-over in just the perfect spot really took this to another level.  You can’t go wrong with Dickinson.  Really nice track. 

Banger, really enjoyed this one man.

Reminds me of Swallow the Sun, very bleak but with all those great harmonies.

More doom, more gloom!

Thank you! On the piano...I haven't used the Logic Session player much, glad it worked well. That's particularly meaningful coming from a really good piano player!

Jeez this is awesome haha, my face is sufficiently melted. The choral harmonies make things feel even more epic. The poetry break is super effective too.

This does NOT feel like 6+ minuets. It's over way too quickly for that. Excellent build and a lovely, heavy fall into a lush, dark world. The spoken word is delivered perfectly and fits so well. I'm not a Dickinson fan, but I might have to be. Your production on this is nothing short of brilliant. It's rich and full without anything clashing.

I had the same feel about Dickinson after putting this together....might need to read some more. The only thing I really knew about her is that the meter she typically uses also goes along with some...other pieces. Which led to this conversation:

Me: "I put some Dickinson at the break in my song this week!"
Wife: "Are you going to use the melody for Yellow Rose of Texas?"
Me: "Nah, I was thinking Gilligan's Island."
Wife: "LOL"

hail yais! \m/ this is awesome and def a face melter of a track.  Love the sound of the guitars and the strings floating around it.  The choral part supporting the emily dickinson is so good.  Excellent title too! Also feeling that Machines of Loving Grace vibes too.  The outro kinda reminded me of Ratatat's earlier work.  Well done!

It almost feels like there's strings in this. If there aren't, they should. It'd add some extra moody.

This is awesome. I love doom metal even though I don't listen to as much of it recently. It was nice to get to hear a really well done doom metal tune!

love the sludge opening but the end was actually amazing!
