Got Me a Harmonica

By Paisleyfrog on June 9, 2024 3:53 am

I spent part of last weekend trying to resuscitate my first electric guitar, a Painfully 80's Strat copy. Between that and the blues flavored song last week, I thought I'd do a 45 degree turn and do some Texas blues. Unfortunately, the guitar project didn't work at all, but the die was cast so I still did the blues.

I went back and forth on doing a slow clean blues, or a fast one. Fast won out. Mostly because I wanted to play harmonica, and the slow blues I started was in a minor key (which is a pain with my level of harp experience). Also just as well because the slow one was pretty damn close to Fool for your Stockings off Degüello, my favorite ZZ Top album. Not like what I recorded is that different from a million blues songs anyway smile

First thought was to make up a Session Player track for the bass and drums, and then solo over it to get it started. That was when I discovered that the Session Bassist has no idea how to play a walking bass (at least that I found). Played it myself, and I think it's better that way anyway.

Last change was to make it into a "false live" track.

Got me a harmonica
Got me a guitar
Yeah, I got me a harmonica
Got me a guitar
They told me, “Make yourself a blues band
You know you’re gonna go so far!”

I set myself to practicing
I played ‘em every day
I set myself to practicing
I played ‘em every day
The licks they flowed like fireworks
And I was on my way

We played a local juke joint
And folks were goin’ wild
Jumping round and screaming’
Got ‘em hot and riled
And up comes a producer
He says “you’re my golden child!”

We went   and played the concert halls
Money pouring in
Sold out shows and folks and folks in line
Money pouring in
Didn’t take to long to notice
That it all went off to him!

So I quit my record contract
Threw it on the floor
So I quit my record contract
Threw it on the floor
I’m back at home recording
Gonna play and shut the door!

I am a total sucker for a harmonica. One day I'm gonna get some and learn. This is great. The vocals are so clear, all the parts mix great. I was entirely fooled by the false live feel I had to check that I hadn't started Spotify by accident or something. Amazing work!

Going to double down on what neon liminal said, you pulled of the faux live sound really well - kinda felt like I was listening in some dingy joint.  I'm not super familiar with Texas Blues but really dug your track, has some great rhythm to it.  Also, hell yeah harmonica!

Thank you! Glad that I pulled off the "live sound"...it definitely took me more than a few tries. I wanted the live ambiance, but didn't want it to sound like a bad recording and sound boomy and hollow.

Harmonica is so much fun! I learned how when I had a long commute to work - it's one of the rare instruments you can play in the car LOL

Thanks!

Now that I think about it, it's probably closer to Chicago blues because of the harmonica, you really don't hear that in Texas blues. Texas blues tends to be just guitar, a bit more raw, a bit more rock and roll. Chicago blues is high energy and tight, and is where you'll find more instruments like piano. Horns can be found in both. But there's so much crossover between styles that it's hard to distinguish smile

Tremendous fun and stellar performance all around! Writing, playing, singing, dissecting various music styles....Your versatility is a little ridiculous big_smile

This is amazing. Agreeing with all above, the live feel you put to this, all around, mixing and vibe and the harmonica!!
