Time for something completely different!

This is a song my wife wrote, and it's been part of our live set. We've tried recording it in the past, and it just never worked...always just felt sterile (mostly because multitracking meant playing to a click). I just tried out the tempo functions in Logic a few weeks back, and it was a huge success...so I wanted to try it out on one of our songs.

It took a little bit of work, and there are still some behaviors I don't quite get, but I'm overall happy with the results. I took the opportunity to add some strings and drums - Logic adjusts the tempo, so I can still record to the click, and have the Drummer add some fills. Also orchestrated a string part - something I probably won't use when this goes on an album, but I like the lush feel.

Acoustic and electric guitar
Fretless bass
Pennywhistle
Logic drummer
Software strings

Oh I like the strings! Those and the penny whistle are a nice combo. Quite a 180 from last week's submission o_O
Please pass on many kudos to your wife - this is a quality, uplifting lullabye for sure!

Was writing a comment for another song when this kicked over, and I was blown away. Love the penny whistle, love the vibe, love the vocals. Going to play this for the family in a bit

I was going for a walk and was listening to the weekly beats tracks on shuffle when I stumbled upon your track. It really stood out with the beautiful singing and the lyrics that felt so very true. A very beautiful song, which just made my stroll even more pleasant.

Kedbreak sent me here!

this is outstanding!  great job using the drums and strings to really round out the sound.  i feel like i've heard this in the closing credits of a film.  beautiful!

(i vote to keep the strings!!)

Incredible track! The singing is stellar! I wanna hear everything you made because of this song!

The bass is also great and supports the main melody well. I can also vouch for the logic drummer! Works well in this track!

Would love a little bridge or solo before the 3rd verse, since it becomes a bit repetitive / feels somewhat rushed at that point. Unrequisite feedback, do with it what you will!

Thanks everyone for the amazing responses!

Thank you! EastWest Symphony Orchestra strings, my go-to string sample pack smile My greatest fear was overproducing the song - pulling a Long and Winding Road and smothering it.

Thank you! I want to add a bit more variation to the strings for the future, but ran out of time for the week. I think that she and I will be discussing the strings in the song - her vote is to keep it stripped down, while I like the added instrumentation. smile

Our first album was a lot more rock oriented - second album will be stripped down acoustic. We'll be posting more of those here as we get them recorded. WB is a great test bed for arrangements and production smile

Glad you liked the bass! I recorded it like four times. "No, play less. No, PLAY LESS." smile Biggest struggle with the Logic drummer was getting the tempo controls to make the downbeat land on the bar. For whatever reason, it kept landing on beat two or three - which screws up the fills.

I could definitely hear a proper whistle break going between v2 and v3. This recording reflects the structure how we perform it, but giving it a bit more space to breathe on the recording would be a good thing. Thanks!

Very comfy.
