Reunion

By orangedrink on July 26, 2020 9:24 pm

I wrote a song with vocals and acoustic guitar yesterday, but I really want to practice singing it more before recording because I have not sang in a while.  Another Digitakt only track using piano samples from the amazing musician Machinedrum.  This is just a loop because my high school is having an LGBTQ virtual reunion.  My school was NOT a gay-friendly place and that word wasn't even spoken except derogatorily when I attended.  A recent graduate put this group together and I'm very excited to talk to other former students, let alone actually realize that I wasn't the only LGBTQ student who went there.

The kick drum has a 90% chance of playing.  The hi-hat has a touch of delay and an LFO that is filtering.  The rimshot has an LFO that is sweeping the pan left and right.  The whole track has a tape plugin adding a touch of wow and flutter (you can hear the pitch the most on the held piano chord)

goals for the week:

- spend 2 hrs listening to people's tracks
- get something to Lynden before he kills me
- move back into the basement
- work on drawing projects for 5 hours
- don't eat food after dinner

Tell me about how you guys are doing!  Love hearing weekly life updates from you all.  I'm trying to figure out what standing desk to buy because I realize I spend way too much time sitting, due to quarantine and not leaving the house.

This is a really neat loop. The beat and piano samples combined are kind of giving me Yoko Kanno vibes.
As for what standing desk to buy: https://xkcd.com/1329/
I'm sorry to hear what you went through. Sounds like your old school could use a paradigm shift towards inclusivity. Hope the reunion is a good time.

I love the mix of percussion that has a volume rise/fall effect and the piano lines. Have fun with the reunion!
For a standing desk, I have found it easier to go for one that can go up and down so that you can adjust the height, sit down when you want as you don't want it standing all day long either.

I dig this. I’m looking forward to the song with vocals though.

Hey, this one is more like an intro with an outro. I was hoping for a mainpart in the middle. But nevermind, if you sing like a madman next week to your acoustic, I will be still your friend.

I like the way the percussion kind of fades in and out and the piano loop is simple but hypnotic.

I hope the reunion is a good experience for you.  I'm sure it'll be better than your actual high school days.  Just curious if you went to a big or small high school.  I switched from a very large school to a much smaller one halfway through high school.  There were a few out and proud students at the small one, but I don't remember knowing of any at the big one.  You would think through sheer numbers there would have been more at the big school and maybe there were, but I actually knew a lot less people there because the sheer number of people made it more anonymous.  You couldn't help but know more people at the smaller one.  Also the smaller one was a magnet school for performing arts, which by its very nature was more LGBTQ friendly.

Even so, just because I was in high school like 25+ years ago, it wasn't as socially acceptable at the time, so I'm sure there were a lot more that weren't comfortable coming out yet.  That was around the time it was a huge deal because two women kissed on an episode of Roseanne.  Scandalous stuff!  smile

I love the drums on this. I don't mind it being a loop at all.

My high school was not gay-friendly either (late 90s / early 2000s), up to and including really gross homophobic in-class rants from the teachers. I identify as cis/hetero now, but at the time my friend group and I would troll the bigots with public displays of affection and mocking gender roles every chance we got. In retrospect I do hope that (and wonder whether) we helped more than we hurt.

Anyway, I hope your reunion was great. You are a lovely person and I'm glad you survived that bullshit.

Cool little beat, I like the piano and movement of the percussion.  As far as a standing desk, if on a budget I would go with IKEA, they have options with adjustable legs.  I’m glad you can have the reunion, great that slowly I do believe the world is becoming more accepting.  When I went to high school it would have been very difficult for anyone who is not straight.  I had my own biases, thankfully I have seen the wrong in my thinking and even my parents who grew up in India have accepted that people can be “different”.  Overall I think the world is improving, I was often called racial slurs growing up and going to school, that would be unheard of for my kids at their school today.

This is a cool lil interlude.  Had me tapping along with percussion.  I always enjoy a good wow & flutta smile

I'm currently playing The Golf Club 2019 with my father in law over the internet while listening to your last few beats (aka catching up on them) and I know too well about needing a stand up desk! My 6 year old tonight "Daddy, are you fat?" wuahahaha. I may have put on 5kg since quarantine, now I need to lose 25 not 20 lol. All for doing some musical together, I feel I have more THERAPY TIME to get out (and actually do Therapy Time part 1 before anything else?)

This song was fun and calming. I hope your virtual reunion was ok. School can be such shit.

fantastic little sushi-style loop. where did you snag those maschinedrum loops?

the virtual reunion sounds like a rad idea. how did it go?
