Bear Trap

By orangedrink on April 10, 2016 9:39 pm

You find yourself at a gay club.  The music is shaking the entire building.  You wander to the dance floor, unable to stop yourself from dancing.  You're surrounded by husky men.  One in particular catches your eye.  He starts weaving his way toward you.  You're locked in his gaze.  You can't stop dancing.  You're in a Bear Trap!

I was a bit under the weather and really busy this week.  A few hours ago, I flipped through my tracks and found a loop and a simple kick beat that I don't really remember making.  The file date was December 2015.  I decided to do a sort of improvised jam by assembling random things as they came to mind!  Tried to keep it simple, minimal, powerful, and to the point.  Wanted to kind of thematically make the track about the gay club house music scene in particular.  I'm trying to get more comfortable addressing my sexuality in my music work.  Shout out to Naiky (house music), Mechlo (improvised electro jams), sylcmyk (lgbt Q.T. 3.14), and George Bowles (no real reason), and everyone else I can't name because I took cold medicine!

I have not experienced the bear trap (I don't frequent any kinds of clubs really these days) but you create a very vivid picture with your description and I can't help but smile.  It's a pretty killer track, too.  Feel better!

I'm glad our society is starting to get to a place where people can express who they are without fear. There are still prejudices and hatred,  no doubt,  but we're making progress.

Nice.  Like the swing on this one.  That driving bass break in the middle rockin' it... kinda wish it had kept it's sequence after the drop!  Diggin' it tho big_smile

This number is supergroovy and your synth sounds
like a grizzly indeed. Well done.

Thanks! smile  Feeling a lot better today.

Agreed!  And the thing of it is, I have to heal from those prejudices and hatred that I have turned towards myself.  As always, i'm looking to learning more about myself via music (both creating and listening).

Left you wanting more!  Keeps you returning to the trap!

GRIZZLY!  Perfect analogy - I love it

I was hoping you'd listen to this track because I was wondering what kind of gif you would use, and of course, you exceeded every expectation.  I have no idea how you do this - it's hilarious!  BRB buying bear mascot outfit

That bass is awesome, super gritty! Those vocal chops are sweet as well. Solid, groovin' track!

that chord progression in the buildup should have appeared more imo, but this is coming from a guy who always prematurely blows his load when it comes to composing music tongue

Thisss isss gooooot ssstufff!

I love the pulsating bass, but it's especially the vocal sample that does it for me here. great track, could totally see myself going nuts over this in a club!

Ultra-satisfying moment: the octave-down on the already great pulse-bass.  Nice stuff.

I'm definitely excited to take this on the road.  I want the vocal drop to be that "OH SNAP" moment for the crowd!

Thanks, I was really really hype about that moment when I first heard what happened when I clicked that octave down.  Your gif wins the entire thread because you have a "bear" and a bear in the same image!

Thanks for these comments.  I can't say I disagree at all!  I tried to do something really minimal and it was actually really difficult for me to keep the variations limited and restrained.  Maybe this song could have a mega-mix that explores all the variations in a 8+min arrangement.  My main hope is that the excitement is given in such a short dose that it makes you want to come back and experience the rollercoaster all over again for that one spectacular view!  And hopefully the whole trip is worth the time! smile

To everyone: This is one of the tracks that I spent the least amount of time on and the positive feedback is a great reminder that I need to "get out of the way" sometimes and let the music work its magic on its own.  Again: I'm really inspired by you all and am so grateful for this community!!

Thanks for listening!  I sampled my voice from another song and didn't realize that the lyrics were related!!  The lyrics are:

"Pick me up, and throw me overboard"

Which is totally suitable for a situation where you are getting "picked up" and are helpless!  Awesome magic music moment.
