Venus Occult

Even with a busy weekend, I was able to shake out a bit more tracking time on this one, putting down one channel of guitar to a click Friday night, and then doing several more parts in that channel and two other channels--plus bass, and drums--on Saturday, along with some editing, arrangement, and mixing. Finishing touches and a bit of reduction on Sunday. (The daylight-saving time change has its distinct disadvantages, but the "extra" hour before the WB deadline is a nice bonus.) As for this piece, I'm kind of digging this mood.

Guitar: PureSalem Mendiola into the Focusrite, with some high-pass Auto-Filter. Left channel guitar gets a send of the Emergence granular plugin.

Bass: 80s Epiphone P-J on both pickups. I tried sidechaining a compressor in there, which sounded good in tracking, but awful in the mix. So this one just gets the standard low-end rolloff with EQ-8.

Drums: the usual-as-of-late 64 Pad Kit Jazz, with 40ms of Max Humanizer.

Sends: one guitar to Emergence, all guitars get some convolution reverb. Bass gets a bit of convolution reverb, as do drums, and the drums get an automated send to an Echo plugin. Wide&warm preset on the stereo channel.

The title comes from an incidence of the planet Venus obscuring Jupiter (when seen from Earth) in the year 428.
