This week's element is chromium, so of course I decided to do a track inspired by the legendary band Chrome. I put down a few beat variations with Ableton's Rock Kit 1 drum rack (through Drum Buss and the Vinyl plugin to dirty it up a bit), then very quickly (under 20 minutes) put down rhythm guitar and then lead guitar, both with Epiphone Moderne through Reuss RF-01 and Vox Wah. For rhythm, I left the wah in one position, but went heavily on it for the lead. I also reversed a bunch of the leads on another track. Then I put down bass (80s Epi P-J, through EQ-8 rolling off below 100Hz, and 50% Cabinet plugin on 4x10 bass) and a bit of organ with Operator. To maintain feel, I didn't quantize the drums or organ. As a final touch, I used (Google) Chrome to record some shortwave sounds from various web DSR stations.
Sends: a convolution reverb (small room, with auto-filter for bass roll-off), and then three return channels of Echo: one with the Climbing Flange preset (particularly Chrome-like), one with the Scratchtastic preset (for the weird pitch bend stuff--I automated the sends to that, except for the organ line), and one with Long Tape preset for the lead guitar channels.
After mixing and uploading...I listened again, and took out some cymbal hits, as well as filtering some high frequencies that were kind of annoying. Now it's better.
Almost everything got auto-pan, and I used Full-Chain master on the two-track output. Title is from the structure often formed by Chromium III ions.
