Knowing I wasn't going to have time over the weekend to work on this week's track, I decided to do four improvisations with feedback return channels in Live.  As a starting point, I put each on its own track and listened to the whole thing, together, without picking subloops or turning it into a "composition."  Hey--it works, so I've left it that way.  I did cut out the initial closed-high-hat impulse that started off three of the feedback sessions, and cut out one mid-piece impulse when the level died down on one session.  (Though I left the other mid-piece.)  Secret weapon on this one: Live's Grain Delay.  MVP: The flanger.

I'm a long Live user myself and was really shocked when discovering this track. Not only because the perfect balance between noise and harmony, but ... it sounds so analog! I pictured you in front of some 60s basic stuff, covered in cables, tweaking stuff.

Thanks, everyone!  Here's how it works: you need some sound source; I used a closed high-hat hit on one MIDI channel.  This went to a return channel with a bunch of effects on it, and I enabled that same return channel's return send, to feed it right back to the input.  (I also enabled an additional send from the return channel, routing it to a reverb.)   

Really, almost any collection of effects works in there, but at the very least, you probably want some delays and a compressor/limiter at the end to keep it from running away completely.  I used the flanger, EQ 8 (great for boosting or attenuating specific feedback frequencies), frequency shifter on ring mod, simple delay, and grain delay.

Once the initial impulse kicks off the feedback, just keep playing knobs and see what happens.  I've done the same thing in hardware (http://deathpig.bandcamp.com/) with a ring modulator, three delays, and an EQ/Fuzz.  It's fun.
