Crystal Twin

By onezero on December 9, 2018 7:10 pm

A going on this week, so here's one that's fairly simple--just drums and guitar, with guitar recorded in a very short tracking session.  Late in the week, I threw together some rhythms (Acoustified Drum Rack 04), and Friday night tracked some Univox hollow-body in modified Fahey C tuning (B F# B F# B D) through the EHX LPB2ube.  I found melodic figures fairly quickly, and figured they'd be compatible, so arranged them late Saturday and early Sunday.

To clean up the mix, I used a bit of high-pass auto-filter on some guitar parts.  Drums went through Drum Buss with the drive cranked up.  Sends: one Echo (automation on the drum parts to send this at the ends of phrases), and two convolution reverbs.  Full-chain master on everything.

Title from the crystalline structure of indium, which (like tin) emits a sound when you bend it.

Tight and energetic, but now I'm wondering what this piece would sound like if it were done with indium samples.

I'm really digging those drums, they really complete the whole thing.

So is next week going to be similar?

Thank you, Jim!  Now...that might be a project for tin...

Thank you!  Next week similar? I wasn't thinking that, but given how crowded this week is, it might be an interesting approach.  (That said, I have no furnace right now, so...tracking is a bit unpleasant and tuning will be a challenge.)

More like tin is next week, so it'd only be fair if you gave the other twin some work.

Woa, I had no idea indium and tin did that. I don't think I ever said this, but your element theme for the year is so cool. It's a shame you'll only get up to tellurium!

Good point!  Definitely a similarity this week--same bpm, same guitar, same tuning.

Thank you! I intend to keep on going in some fashion this coming year (for 2017, I posted tracks over at Leafo's streak.club), so...there's no reason I can't keep going. That'd take us up to Rutherfordium.
