Sunrise Duty

By OleJazzer on February 10, 2024 7:42 pm

I called this one Sunrise Duty because it reminds me of standing watch in the U.S. Navy watching the sun come up over the horizon. On one hand you have a bunch of mundane tasks to perform and there is a certain rhythm to it while on the other there is the magnificent beauty of the Sunrise explosion of subtle colors.

I have always been fascinated by quartal harmony. The pretty part is composed of shifting tensions making and unmaking sometimes rarefied quartal events.

I used an iSpark program for the drums

Very nice use of strings here - it does feel like the sun is coming up. The percussion changes the vibe of the song. If we removed the drums, it would be much more classical/dramatic, but that drums takes into a different direction. Really interesting choice. I like how you manipulate the atmosphere, from slight tension, optimism, hope.

The melody is very special, the variations are very cool and unique!!

Thanks I appreciate your comment. I was fortunate in that the building I stood watch in during that portion of my time in the Navy was a glass building so I could see out all four directions. One time it was a little scary when a hurricane came in, and I saw one of our hurricane proof doors flying through the air, I thought it is hurricane proof, and that it has no damage to itself but apparently the hinges were not hurricane proof then I realized I was in a glass building with a metal door flying past.

Thank you. I appreciate your comments. Sometimes I’ve been told them a little too subtle.

Wow that’s a crazy story! That’s the kind of watch that makes you appreciate the long quiet boring watches, where absolutely nothing happens.

No kidding. There were many many of those. My first watch they gave me an unloaded, 1911. I didn’t wanna carry it because I thought it was more dangerous to have one that was unloaded than one that was loaded. They told me well they’ll think that it’s loaded so people will be scared because you have it on you. My comment was yeah they’ll be more scared because I have it on me and they’ll shoot me. I won’t have any way to, do anything about it so basically had to sit at a desk anyway so I sat at a desk, guarding the phone and cleaned it for four hours, and when I had to go on my roving patrol, I kept it tucked away, so it wouldn’t be too threatening I figure if I’m in front of two glass doors cleaning a fire. Maybe that looked a little more threatening then sitting there  with a worn out 1911 colt. I couldn’t believe they thought an unloaded gun was a deterrent, but the building was locked. It was on a guarded base by people who had guns that were loaded so I felt pretty safe. I wasn’t there by myself there was one other sailor roving around  inside the building.
