Orchestral Intro #3

By NWSPR on January 23, 2022 11:58 pm

This one became an unwieldy beast in the final hours before uploading.

I'm playing around with a more cinematic approach based on many layers of monophonic synths in different ranges to create polyphony similar to a traditional orchestra. There are about eight layers of Moog Grandmother and M32 and six layers of Pro One. During recording I manually detuned the oscillators to the rhythm and discovered that  volume swells manually played on the lower Moogs create a really great bow effect making the synths sound more like strings.

Most of the individual tracks are analog synths manually played but in the middle I added some BBC string samples and piano to add some percussive quality to the droning synths.  Also some white noise mixed in from the Pro One.  In total, 28 tracks and admittedly I got lost and started to have trouble mixing and keeping track.  So as a goof I ended on a different vibe.

The two best things I learned technique-wise were manual rhythmic detuning and volume swells as live expressive controllers that brought the synths to life. This is also the first time I've run the entire mix through a single stereo reverb patch.  I know that is common but not for me but seemed appropriate for this composition. Sounds really cool but I feel like I lost some distinctiveness in the stereo delay effects so it was a trade off.

Thanks for listening!

Definitely some lovely tones in here and great effect trying this epic mix of synth sounds!  Big fan of brassy synth tones and there's one (or many) that grab my ear in there.  End definitely took a turn!  haha.

An haunting epic. The layers of synth you put there come up and down as waves and have really a lot of life to them. Some sound even like a haunting choir. And then at 3:34 the track morphs instantly into a fun synth track. I did not see that transition coming! smile

Wow, this turned out really cool man.  The volume swell this sounds awesome, I'm going to have to mess around with that.  Love the outro too, not what I was expecting!

wow, this is like movie theater trailer level epic.  terrific job.  wild how this came about in an experimental manner.

...and then the actual movie started at 3:34 lol

Nice way to use monosynths, the result sounds very good. Ending is great big_smile

I love the "warmth" of your synths. Very nice.

I was zoning out to the synth drones and then I got dropped into a video game dance party or something.  Cool stuff.  The volume swells on the drones were really nice.

haha, I love that change up in the end. This sounded huge. Sounds like some interesting learnings and fun with some hardware which is awesome. A great cinematic feeling for sure.

I laughed when the song suddenly shifted. Really love the atmosphere you created, though. Could happily listen to more of that experimentation (and of course, the impromptu dance parties.)

very impressing. I love those deep basstunes.

I love the rich stereo field!
lol, didn't expect the intro to suddenly lead into the actual song big_smile
Great build-up before around 3:30!

Those waves of ambience wash over me like a numb limb freshly awaken to a breakfast of warm blood. And then the ending gives me some hardcore Billy Idol vibes. I dig it.

Nice- the detuning is rad

It took a while for the song to start, but it's a pleasant wait

The detuning synth swells sound awesome.  I especially enjoyed the cascading effect they had to them.  Woah then we take the headphones off and get back to refueling the space ship.  Nice!

really neat sound
