Good Day On A Bad Planet

By NWSPR on March 15, 2020 10:26 pm

Last week I did a super upbeat, happy, comp that some described as having a bit of a Christmasy sound :-). So this week, I toned down the joy from 11 to about a 3 and played layers of overdriven bass on top of synths. Then I polished this turd like a Jeanie's lamp until it sparkled just enough to keep me in week 11.

Curious to know how you are doing, in all parts of the world with the Corona Virus.  In Brooklyn, things are okay.  For some stupid fucking reason, you can't buy toilet paper because the shelves have been cleared as if that is the big risk here.  I plan on shutting my office down this week for remote work, and waiting to hear if the will suspend schools.  Would love to hear your experiences thus far.

And on a completely different topic, I am hosting a SciFi film festival this fall.  We'll have online screenings and awards as well as a live festival in Williamsburg Brooklyn.  The festival is called the Brooklyn SciFi Film Festival or BSFFF.  We've started accepting submissions so if you have anything (short or feature) or know somebody, please send them my way. Here's a link to submit films: https://filmfreeway.com/brooklynscififilmfestival

Hope you are all well.  Be safe. Rock on. Send me some SciFi. See you in the comments.

Hell yeah man, nice change of pace from last week.  I love the drony sound at the beginning and end, it really sets the mood for the tune.  Both of those ascending sweep transitions are pretty badass too.

There's been something like 60 corona virus cases in Chicago, but the panic is sure hitting hard.  Schools are going to be closed for like 4 weeks, restaurants and bars are shut down for the rest of the month, pretty much everyone I've talked to will be working remote until further notice.  Fun stuff.

Super awesome work dude; this track definitely increased my joy level. big_smile

This kicks ass.  Maybe not as overtly upbeat as last week, but still feels positive to me.

Corona virus panic is in full swing here in Vegas.  Grocery stores have been ransacked and it's the only thing anyone talks about when you do happen to venture out.  I think I've got a little tickle in my throat today, but hopefully it's just psychosomatic or one of those passing things.  I'm not personally worried about dying or anything, but it would definitely mess with my job if I got sick.  Even a run-of-the-mill cold wouldn't be good right now because everyone would just assume it's corona virus.

I don't make films, but I do sometimes write goofy sci-fi stories.  Good luck with your festival!

Markedly less upbeat but very energetic nonetheless, there's some drive here that plays to the ever growing sense of emergency that's being felt. The bouncy synthline break is super fun, I also like the siren-synth towards the end!

Things are ok here too! People panic bought toilet paper as well (bad case of groupthink). Going to be working from home for a while; Schools and daycares are all closed for minimum 2 weeks, today they asked to close bars and gyms (my gym closed). It's going to be pretty quiet, hopefully these measures help the health system!

I saw about the festival on FB, that's awesome! I will check with my brother is he has anything to submit, is the festival US or international?

You stay safe too heart

The hero will prevail with this song. Synth tone and the bass 3/4 through is fucking sick.

Rock on!

Super well executed track. Love how you mix the acoustic and electronic elements.

And yes things are doing good in Montreal. Not too many known case yet. Will do remote work, but with the 2 kids at home so it will be what it will be... The girlfriend cannot do remote work.

SciFI film festival sound dope.

I could see this tune as a theme song for something.

This is cool - I like the vibe alot and the multiple layers - the distorted bass, the guitar-like tone underneath.

Working from Japan here - it's a mixed bag. A lot of people are now fully remote and schools are closed for now but on the other hand many people seem to be pretty relaxed and going to public places. A lot of people wear masks but that's not unusual either for this season (pollen allergies) here. I just hope people don't relax too much too soon.

This is very powerful piece! Again, the bass guitar-like sound drives it in a great fashion. A lot of going on there, but stays in the direction beautifully...a success all around in my opinion. Regarding the virus stuff, here in Finland today very strict orders were issued and for many people (including me) it means working from home. The policy here is to try to make the virus spread at a slower pace, that the hospitals can keep up better. Stay safe and take care, everyone!

btw, the track title is ace, too smile

I like how this song's around a 3 on the joy scale, but like 7 on the evil scale. Sick bass as usual.

My company's transitioning everyone remote. Like Foo said, Chicago's getting worse, fast. It's going to blow up ... I imagine large groups of people were infected this past weekend with all of the St. Patty's day celebrations.

Great track. Dirty and powerful. Stay healthy.

Excellent guitar sound you got going here.  It reminded me a bit of NIN's With Teeth album a bit but then those brassy pads came in and gave it a nice touch.  Kudos on that lead synth solo at the end too.  Yais!

Really dope work on guitar and synth. Has a nice dark vibe!
Haha i really don't get it why toilet paper is out all over the world... while there seems to be plenty of beer in the shelves...

Man, what a long week.  Seems like a month since I posted this track and asked everyone's Corona experiences.  Happy to see most of us are still able to contribute tracks and stay in touch!

Thanks! That drone sound was kind of my favorite part.  It's the sound of my bass through my pedal board effects. Totally random afterthought but I liked it and repeated it throughout the track.

Sounds like Chicago is taking similar measures as NYC.  Do you have kids?  I got two starting online school today (Monday 3/23).  Cabin fever!  I would be drinking heavy if I didn't have my kids staring at me 24/7.  Can't go out to a bar or to friends and got to set a good example!

Happy to hear that because we all can use some joy!  For me, joy = bass + overdrive + banging on 4 strings!

Hope you are feeling well and that tickle in the throat did not get worse.  I had a friend that booked a trip to Vegas early next month, so he's bummed.

If you write sci fi stories, and make music, you're two thirds in to making a short film.  Now's the time to dive in! Let me know and I'll send you a free pass for submission.  You have several months to work on it if you're interested.

Hey Gab, come on... I know you have a Sci Fi film in you.  You got 3 months.  Go!  I would watch just for the soundtrack alone smile Hope you are well... stay healthy!

The tone in my Gibson bass is super dope.  If I plugin my often unused Fender, it would come out (gulp) "jazzy" smile. Thanks for listening!

Yep, I am in a similar situation although my wife is here to help since she can work remote.  Got the two kids at home.  I think it's harder on them than me.  They have to look at me and put up with my corny dad jokes 24/7.  I feel bad for them!

Hang in there!

Thanks for listening!  You need to put together a film and submit!  I mean, basically we're all living in a sci fi movie at the moment so how hard can it be?

Same thing here in NYC, but starting this week, they really are starting to crack down so people will not be able to be in public as much.  It will be interesting to see how it goes and how cooperative people are.  Good luck with your situation in Japan!

Sounds like Finland has a similar policy to NYC.  This week, the guidelines have been increased and all non-essential businesses must remain closed or work remote. This is very difficult for my agency.  Even though we work all online, I have many clients that still pay by check and I received notice that we are not permitted access to our office to get mail.  It's a mad scramble to get our clients to pay online this week.

Crazy times.

Thanks for listening to the track.  If and when I pick up the bass guitar for a track, it tends to lead the direction and composition of the track ahead of drums and synths.  Not sure why that is, but I guess it's my work flow.  Since I've been using a lot of bass guitar over the last weeks, I'll need to switch to synths first in order to make sure I can change things up a bit.

Also, btw, I very much enjoyed your track last week. Not sure I expressed as much in the comments, but you have a great knack at putting a lot into a very compact track.  It's very well thought out.

Well, did Chicago blow up yet?  NYC certainly did.  We lead the nation infections.  You guys will need to try harder if you're going to keep up!  Love your corona track last week.  Lyrics had me laughing my ass off.  Production had me jealous smile

Dang, thanks for the NIN comparison.  I was not thinking in that vein but, maybe I should be smile definitely Trent Reznor is fertile ground to emulate.  I want to checkout his sound track work a bit more so see  what I can learn.  The synth lead at the end is more of a study in letting go.  I just flail about on the keys and do not edit.  I did that last week and this week.  The idea being more of a stream of consciousness style of playing, even with mistakes. Just channeling the vibe.

Thanks for listening!

Thanks! Yeah, trying to go darker that week.  And nothing is darker than needing a roll of toilet paper when there is none to be had.  I guess that fuels the panic!

Yeah man, we're in lockdown here too.  No kids for me, but my girlfriend is a teacher so I get to hear the joys of the whole online classroom thing from that angle.  I'll pound a couple for you tonight!

Favorite one you've done so far. The melody keeps it pretty interesting. Sound design/combination is also well selected.
