Chapter One - The Fire

I remember that night like it was yesterday. Poor Liam, back then it was his wife, now it's his fucking kid.

The fire happened five years ago. Liam took little gold down to the fair, only happens once year, and for the Gold family, that was a tradition.  Mary couldn't come this year; she was working the late shift, so it was just Liam and his daughter.

Back then I was just an officer, been on the force for just over a year. I got the call to go investigate the gold residence, someone heard some loud noises, and here I was thinking it was just a domestic.

When I got there. I can still feel it, everything seemed fine. The bedroom light was on. Parked my car, got out and started walking towards the front door, and then just out of nowhere, the loudest noise you've ever heard, and the house goes up in flames. I go flying back and crack my head on a tree. Just before I black out I manage to get to my car and call it in, then it all goes black.

You see Mary came home early, said to herself she'd surprise them when they got home, that way they'd at least enjoy a bit of their old tradition together. When Mary came home, she wasn't expecting what she saw next. It was only a few days later that the autopsy determined her death wasn't because of the burns or the smoke she had inhaled. She was dead before the fire. She'd been stabbed to death.

I woke up in the back an Ambulance, minor concussion, we still hadn't left the burning house, and it seems I was only out of it for a few minutes. I sit up for just a minute and I see Liam being held back by a couple of firemen, screaming her name. Little Gold stood a few feet behind him, too young for it to hit her, yet old enough to know that her life wasn't going to be the same.

Notes

  1. Fire noises, Sirens and other SFX were compiled from sounds found on Freesound.org, then mixed together to achieve the sounds you hear on this track.

  2. Samples used at the end of the song are from a fire safety video filmed back in 1946. Found here: http://www.archive.org/details/Fire1946

Totally hooked on this narrative dude. All of your tags should be Noir.

Nice chords, love the lo-fi beat, mixed well, overall great second entry.

Chilling. An astonishingly written prose delivered with an incredibly emotive delivery which quite literally draws you into the narrative and forces lucid mental visualisation. Something like this can either come off cheesy or genius, and after the catchy Atmosphere-esque chorus and accompanying small rap verse, this stamps itself as the latter with an intense confidence. The music itself is a soft downtempo backdrop moving into a pure hip hop flavour which never shouts for attention, but when some is given it shines. Another point I HAVE to make is the siren sampling, which jumps between strictly scene-setting to beat-adding in seconds in a genuinely ingenious manner. The fact this appears to be the first in a serial of a genuinely interesting narrative delivered with such clarity, passion and precise musicianship makes me extremely excited. Quite literally the best entry to the challenge this month.

What I said about you on my round-up this week. Serious kudos man, this track fucking floored me. SUPER psyched for next week!

Thanks heaps guys, I'm glad you're enjoying the story so far.

@AndrewKilpatrick: Thanks heaps for that amazing review dude, really appreciate it. I'm glad you liked the siren sampling, I was really proud of it and felt like I had done something creative and for someone else to not only notice it but enjoy it gives me a huge amount of joy smile

@rdomain: Thanks dude, glad you enjoyed it.

this reminds me of Plan B's story concept album kinda. I'm really looking forward to hearing all of it!
