Stereo Songs (2008)

By Nickmaynard on January 7, 2018 9:01 pm

My new year's resolution for 2018 was "NO NEW PROJECTS". I have a difficult time finishing things I've started and because of this my hard drives are littered with unfinished songs and videos. Over the past two weeks, I've begun systematically sorting through this material, organizing it, deleting things, and finishing projects. This may not be exactly within the rules of Weekly Beats but I'd like to use it as a place to post this material. These songs may have been started years ago but were never finished, never mixed, and never shared before now.

In 2008, I had an idea for a double album. You would be able to listen to either album individually but you would also be able to play them back simultaneously from two separate devices and the songs would match up creating a new experience. Obviously this was influenced by Zaireeka and other similar albums. I wanted to write the songs in such a way that when a vocal part in one song ended, a vocal part on the other song would begin. When listened to together, the lyrics would create a new context to reveal other meanings. I also wanted to experiment with writing songs in different keys and creating a kind of polytonal collage.

Anyways, this was obviously WAY too ambitious and I never followed through on the double album idea (though I still think it's a cool idea) but I did begin to write a song to test these ideas out and never finished it. Almost exactly ten years later, I've gone through and completed it. To recreate the experience of listening to this on two separate systems, I've panned one song hard left and the other hard right.

That sounds like an amazing idea for a (double) album. and i really like this test track for it. i've got this mono button on my headphones, so i'm able to mix them down to a mono track easily, so satisfying to hear the puzzle fall into place.

The two halves definitely sound great together and even just on headphones it's a rather unique experience. Very nice, happy melodies that would normally grate on me are actually very pleasing here.

Maybe it got panned a bit too much.

great project goal!  it feels so good to tie up loose ends!  best wishes to you on your journey this year & this song is really joyful!
