10 down feels like a milestone! I am pleased with this one and with how far we have all come in ten weeks. This is in Am made with Renoise, Neutron, Pro-800, TD-3 and an Amen break. I am especially pleased with the B section and it will likely be a jumping off point for the next few weeks. The A section I was going for a little more atmospheric jungle with LTJ Bukem Atlantis as reference, but the B section ended up developing better imo. I was referencing some more contemporary jungle for that like Sully and Subjects.

I spent over an hour trying to exactly recreate an 808 bass sample, and didn't quite get there but i used it anyways. I don't think i'll do that again haha but i did learn a few things along the way. I feel like i'm getting close to a breakthrough on how to shape and tone the Amen break which i have also spent a lot of time on over the past bunch of weeks. I have also spent a good amount of time this week experimenting with bit crushing, time stretching, and sample rate manipulation on all samples. i think that it was time well spent and will pay off as well. I want to end up with a classic jungle sound that is also contemporary.

If anyone has a strong preference on a referencing plugin let me know. I am considering buying one and have heard good things about Reference 2 and ADPTR Audio Metric AB. I know Melda has one too.

the highlight of this is definitely the break and the weird tweaking to it. it's stuttery, pitchy, and unpredictable while still keeping the groove. loved it. the beginning made me want a whole set that's just minimal... breaks and 303 town. favorited.

Nice to hear of your progress. I definitely can hear it too. Your breakthrough is yet to come and sets us free.

Ahh the break is delicious, just a pleasure to listen to. On an 808 note you might enjoy Sublab by Future Audio Workshop, especially if you like fine tuning your bass and 808 sounds. 808s are as much a rabbit hole as the 303 lol

I'd question whether a reference plugin is worth it, your mixes are pretty great. Probably more important in that space is thinking about how your mix evolves as a result of your arrangement. Also learning to do referencing by ear seems more useful in the long run.

For 808/drum synthesis in general, there's a super versatile open source drum synth called geonkick: https://geonkick.org/

Track is great too, BTW! The off-kilter amen is pretty attention grabbing big_smile

Yoo! this is sick. Love the acid sounds, killer drums. Nice arrangement.

Just use your ears like you already are, reference tracks, and always be mindful of dynamics and you're golden - no fancy plugin necessary imo. Enjoying your stuff keep it coming

HOLY MOLY I just saw that Rhino gif and almost died laughing

"Time to wake up!  Time to wake up!"  lol

I LOVE it when someone uses 303 for non-acid music this is MASSIVE fam

Hot. I like the atmospheric A section, but the B is really cool. Can't go wrong with an amen break, nice use. Great stuff, I'm seeing this lion bat soaring, what a creature!

Very nice old school jungle grooves…it also has some chiptune-like features, which addto the hectic feeling….wicked stuff!

Thanks, friend! I really appreciate the comment. I haven't done a purely atmospheric tune since eustachian so it's probably time for another. Good goal for April.

Thanks, Neon! I know, two rabbit holes might have been too much haha. but i think i am digging myself out of them! thanks for the Sublab rec, i will check it out.

Thanks for the comment! It's true, the way I am referencing now works fine so it's probably money better spent on something else.

Thanks, OD! I was at a club in Montreal last fall for a non-acid set (Molyness) and there was one track that had a bit of 303 in it and i was like, is there literally anything that sound better than 303 leads? That kind of sent me down this path and i'm not looking back haha

lol, i am SO glad you like the rhino gif. I have been holding onto it for like 20 years and it still makes me laugh every time heart

oh wait it's a rhino MASSAGE okay that might be even funnier than the baby rhino impatiently waking up the sleeping human

Sick breaks! the filter cutoff adds a lot of dimension, and that glitchy sound at the end! awesome work!
