VitalityLoop

Started with a harmonica sample, and wanted to make some hip-hop. Waaay harder than I was hoping. I ended up with millions of cool-ish loops, none of which jumped out at me. I find making variations with chopped samples way harder than just writing melodies, but it's something I would love to get better at.

Any feedback welcome, especially on how to make better use of samples.

I love it...... about halfway thru my first listen, I realized that I accidentally had a you-tube tab open that was playing a Brian Eno track at the same time (sorry)
On that first listen, I was like "oh cool, the harmonica is in a different key than the bass/synth pads... oops" On second listen, I hear that you totally started out sort of being on the same page as the harmonica, but then are trying to have a chord progression and the harmonica just keeps on being itself. That's how harmonicas are in real life so it totally works! However I missed the bassy pad of whatever Eno track had been playing earlier!!
So maybe that's my totally accidental feedback to you... I like the spaciousness of your orchestration, which probaby makes it easier to rap over... but maybe when it starts feeling unglued, or for emphasis, add a pad underneath.........
And get Brian Eno to write it for you wink just kidding. DIY. Loved this track, thank you!

I hope that feedback didn't sound harsh, I loved this track (favorited)

Haha, holy crap, this is hilarious. What Eno track was it? I was thinking at one point of using a bass pad, inspired by Moth Equals, but it didn't make it in. There is a mid-pad in some sections, but I probably under-did it, I'm not very good with pads yet. Maybe I need to make a track that's like 90% pads next time. Any advice in that direction would be appreciated!

No idea, it could have been any of his ambient tracks (no offense Mr Eno, sir). I feel like there are many "pads" folks on here that you could collaborate with! Or add the vox, personally works for me every time! Thank you so much

I have a weakness for Harmonica so i really like this track. Nice atmosphere! Hiphop or not, whatever. Sounds great!

Very cool harmonica samples. I think you used them effectively, but I can totally see that trial-and-error process taking a long time when you are mixing instrument sounds that aren’t typically used together. Nice work!

really enjoyed this! I think the harmonica is so expressive it's really engaging throughout. It's like it is taking the place of lyrics but i like it better. nicely done!

Thanks y'all smile

Very nice.
For feedback, I'd say don't be afraid to let the harmonica do it's thing, if it's doing a melody, it won't really lend itself to chops. Best to do so with chords and perhaps you can layer those two things.

Interesting. It's a melody, but not synced to the beat in any way. But I was wanting chops. What kind of things them themselves more to chops?

Like I said, harmonicas doing chords.

oh shucks i'm getting to the end of the backwards naught101 13 track album sad

the harmonica is giving me a nice Moby vibe
