I was listening to Skinny Puppy a lot over valentines day, and I wrote this song inspired by them (lower your expectations!). I wanted something to sway awkwardly to in a dark room. A favorite song, and empowing enchantment for some lost soul.

honestly, i loathe this level of vulnerability, but it's weekly beats! so here we are. you decide if you like it or not, but i am cringing and dying at the thought of anyone hearing this.

vocals were recorded into the M8 using a Shure SM57 amped with a Zoom h4n. h4n is doing a bit of input processing, and then I just smash it down to 8-bit using the m8 for that uncomfortable "nails on chalkboard" sound.

I think I'm going to try to write another thing with vocals, but not be quite so harsh with them, or at least harsh in a different way.

BLAHHHHHHH hitting send!

Woah! this track is awesome. The vocal processing definitely channels skinny puppy (sidenote: just saw them live last december, it was great). That breaks at 1:50 and 3:00 with the distorted synth sound so good. Love the basslines and the synth melodies too, well done.

You can definitely hear the SP inspiration, but a bit more stripped down, which works so well with the theme in the lyrics. It is its own thing. If you haven't checked out Paisleyfrog's submissions, he's another SP fan (and industrial fan in general) who takes inspiration in new directions.
Hard agree with ddmm64 on that distorted synth - harsh yet smooth all at the same time. It's luscious!

Your vocal processing is really good and, at least from this side of the speakers, compliment your voice very well.  I like that you invoked the idea of Skinny Puppy more so than trying to make a Puppy track, your song feeling controlled and less sonic chaos.  Happy to have listened to this, I'm glad you pushed through your discomfort to upload it.

I absolutely LOVE what you've done here. The vocals sound like they are being whisper screamed, which fits perfectly with the tone for the song. The rest of the composition is gorgeous too, those percussion strikes are sooooo nice! I'm a sucker for those tom fills... Great, great, great work!!!

Yeah exactly. I had considered doing a big sustain synth jam over it (like their track Worlock or beauty is the enemy), but I felt it didn't need it.

I did have the vocoder out, but remembered that the m8 can't playback samples and record at the same time. So i'm going to do vocals a different way next week which will allow for more doubling effects and processing through effects like a vocoder.

dredging feelings up from the inside, then asking other people to listen to them is often more responsibility than I'm willing to accept.

100% whispered vocals, then FLATTENED them with POST AD.

vocal processing should approach "if Starscream from transformers had a band"

Killer track. Snare-toms are so good, very in my face. Love the "whispered" vocals, very in front too with all that saturation, with dense bass right behind!

Synths are a great vibe, processing on all elements seems to be on point. Very well executed.

Listened back to back, so good, had to try to dissect the different elements... smile Bravo!

Yeah! This is so great! I admire your poetry on top of the great accompaniment from the rest of the song. It all fits together really well. Not sure I am brave enough yet for vocals ... maybe when I get desperate in week 40+? Great M8 work and great song.

The drums are a Yamaha RX5 (I'm using a pack from samples from mars), it has more of a rock sound than a dance sound (like an 808 or 909). "The goth drum machine" someone called it once.

fuck yeah, love skinny puppy and can definitely hear the influence here -- great vocal processing and love the percussive sounds (especially those synth tom drops). I think you fully attained your goal of creating something to sway to in a dark room.

would love to hear more like this, great work!

wow. This is great! Love the vocals. Drums are killer. All of it together, so so good. Favorited!

I have something cooking already for next week, and I'll see how it goes! My ear is hearing a bit of "Heresy" by NIN for this new one. But again, I'll just let that influence me onto the same playlist as I like to say.

probably less harsh, but more processed vocals. but I'll see, I'll just let the ear decide.

Thanks for listening!

Yeaaa! love it, great scratchy vocals and goes nicely with everything else going on!
