scrap dance

oddly, I have nothing to say about this track that is both a departure for me tone wise and in 7/8 time. it's sorta down to business.

i was going for something a little more experimental but ended up just making this tune.

7/8 is a great time signature for breakbeats as it plays tricks on your mind where the beat will resolve back to the one. weave a bassline in there and you'll be swaying all over the place.

Indeed, the slight weirdness of the time signature kept my brain going "Wait, what happened there?"
Great job, I thoroughly enjoyed the beat and where the melody took me. I'd love to hear more stuff like this!!!

Experimental enough for me! Pretty cool use of 7/8, flows pretty well IMO, which I find hard to do with anything else than 4/4. The part around The breakdowns are cool, especially liked the part around 2:15 with the stabby synths.

You're both in luck, weekly beat 24 is in 9/8 time. Much different vibe from this track though.

I think in 4/4 time, the downbeat gets a little diluted because the measure is so equal (but also makes it easiest to follow). I believe it makes it harder (physically) to dance to (too repetitive) whereas off time sigs like 3/4, 7/8, 9/8, are much more natural and work with a wider variety of body movements.

I think one strategy people use is to try to offset the beats, or swing the beat to get more groove out of it, but personally, I find using velocity does a better job of creating groove than delaying hits (read everything Prince ever said about groove).

To make a groove feel smooth, use velocity instead of timing. Fill 7 beats with a hit, now use velocity to coax out the groove.

In fact, I don't worry about timing at all, the time is razor sharp, the best drummer I could ever hope for. There is a reason why drum machines have an ACCENT toggle and not some micro timing functionality.

So if you're struggling to make things "groovier" definitely try messing with velocity before timing.

Thanks for those insights, I'll have to try that out!

Scrappy little tune, doing its own little thing.
