red star

By mwmwmw on February 26, 2024 12:01 am

I feel I should caveat here that by "red star" I don't mean a communist star, but a literal star like Betelgeuse. Something big, eminent. Or war, mars, etc. Revolutionary.

Vocals are a bit out of sync in places, I just ran out of time to line em all up.

Sorry, i had to re-up because my vocals were panned slightly to the right. And that destroyed your comment!

The real drums are Yamaha RX5 (samples). That is a beast of drum machine.

I don't feel comfortable yet with actually singing. Had I had a bit more time and some privacy I wanted to scream that last verse every other line. I spent a lot of energy on these vocals and lyrics, but I wanted to do more processing. Going to try something else next week and use my shapeshifter as a backup vocal, and maybe try to do a more orc-like whisper voice for the center lol. We'll see!

Those talked-wispered vocals works really good. Thick synths, nice engaging beat. Well done. NIN influences for sure.

HOW DARE YOU!

lol smile

gotta check out that drum machine, it is really good!

I imagine this fits well in the World of Darkness, where the "red star" is a sign of the apocalypse. It's also pretty dark, so it's got that going for it.

I hope this is ok to say, your vocal delivery sounds more confident this week from last...at least to my ears.

It's a good track, I enjoyed listening to it and am glad you fought through your discomfort again.  Out of curiosity, do you listen to a lot of industrial music?  I ask because the elecrto-industrial sound is quite strong in this and last weeks track but it doesn't sound like you are trying to catch that 90's sound which is super refreshing.  Looking forward to hearing what you do next.

I set up a lot more for doing vocals this time and spent some time getting into character (the hardest part). I think for next week I'm going to use a booth and my best mic to track the vocals. Then I think I can do a few more ambitious things I didn't do this week. I'm just trying to please my industrial ear.

I have listened to industrial since at least the mid-90s (probably earlier, but can't recall exactly, maybe Front 242) with everyone else getting into NIN, KMFDM and Marylyn Manson (all I could find and learn about). But it was Download (and later Skinny Puppy) that landed with me. A fan of New Wave, punk, and 80s pop before all that. I like all sorts of stuff.

I'm glad you like it because it's very new ground for me and I've been trying to grow. heart

I was straight up trying to do a "Heresy" style synth arpeggio, but it evolved.

It's tough when your brain wants to use a symbol that has already been re-ified, but I decided to go for it instead of telling myself now.

But, it did get me thinking of doing a little world building. So I came up with some stuff, and going to start putting it into tracks next week.

Thanks for this comment!

Another amazing industrial track, could listen to a whole album of this! Vocals are on point for that skinny puppyish sound but really liked a lot of other parts about this track - the massive distorted bassy synth, the background, those tremolo'd background synths at 1:50, the steppy breakbeat percussion at the end - really cool sound design overall, loved it

That's the plan right now! I think I have to find a better way to track vocals because it takes a really long time. I probably just need to practice more.
