Standing on the Shoulders of Giants

Hi hi, thanks for stopping by!
It's been another busy week, and I'm continuing to prep for my live M8 set next weekend. This track was based on an 8-bar loop from last week and put together in a couple of hours on Sunday

The core of this track is the PETAL_173 break from the excellent Fayt Kit. It's got a really nice build throughout where the drums become more high-pitched and tinny over time. In week 13, I stretched it down to 124bpm on the m8 via the REP. BPM play mode and thought it sounded pretty fun with some pads. This week, I rendered the stretched break to a new sample and then sliced it into 64 equal parts that I could use for different drums. I sampled drums from the start of the break for a more thumpy bass sound and drums from later parts of the break for a higher-energy sound. Prior to this track I haven't really thought a ton about sampling breaks, so it was fun to play around and learn some new things.
A few more straightforward elements:
- Reese bass
- pads are Macrosynth's WAV PARPHONIC mode with a bunch of effects
- sometimes I layer the break drums with non-sampled/hand-programmed drum pattern
- the title is "Standing on the Shoulders of Giants" because that's what it feels like to use a good breakbeat
Hope everyone's weeklybeats is going well! You're all killing it, and I'm digging all the music that I get to listen to every week
