Stained Glass Eyes

By MRDRCAT on February 4, 2024 4:38 pm

I wanted to start with a simple bassline, something that could chug along under a whole track. I got distracted about five minutes in and wandered off into another direction. The mix is still a little uneven because I have zero idea what I'm doing. The whole thing was done on the Dirtywave M8 with mostly original patches except for the kick drum (from Trash80's FM Drum pack), and the reedy accompaniment (a guitar sample from Rob Allison that I messed up but decided to use anyway). Movie samples are from Die Sister Die, a public domain thriller from the 1972.

This is great! That first drum hit came in almost like a gunshot, really set the feel. Loved how the feel of the whole track just gelled when those ambient background vocals came in….and then chipped back away at it when it hit that breakdown at 1:50.

I like but it could be great if you made a little change. I think this would slay if you started a full fast beat after the "pretty if you tried" sample. I mean something like this:

I love this! If you don't mind I would love to incorporate this change!

Thank you! My arrangements are still a little uneven, but WB is really helping me get quicker at making decisions and running with them. I was pretty happy with how this one came together overall smile

Of course you can incorporate this change. It's your tune, I just demonstrated what you can do. Go for it!

Right there with you - really wanting to practice my arranging and songwriting skills. It’s one thing to make a nifty 8 bar beep boop, another thing entirely to maintain interest over three minutes!

For sure! Sometimes it feels like you're writing 5 songs for the sole purpose of throwing them all into one in order to keep it going.

I feel seen. Hahahaha... Joking aside, this is very fun! I really like the sparkly direction you took it. The vocal samples in the second half (both the straight movie quotes and the "aaaahhh"s work very well here for setting the tone. This felt sparkly. I like sparkly.

Also, I felt no issue with the mix, but my ear is generally terrible to pick up on that kind of nuance.

Heh - you and me both. I don't do "nuance." But yeah, stuff has been moving in a sparkly direction this year so far, and I kinda like it!

I hear you on getting distracted partway through a song big_smile

Seriously! Sometimes it's cool because you go in a rewarding direction. Sometimes you just helplessly watch your original idea get crowded out by "what if I tried this!!" until you can't remember what it was like.

This is literally what I'm doing right now lol

This is a great title and a great song
Love the synths, and the beat is peak, just enough of them
Vocals are a nice touch

Oh wow, thank you!! I did tweak the mix a little after this post and am still pretty happy with how the track turned out.

As well you should be happy
