Office Gossip

By MRDRCAT on December 29, 2024 3:13 pm

I wanted to go out with a bang, so I tried pulling together a lot of my favourite lessons learned throughout WB2024 and make something melodic that keeps moving. Like something that would play over my own ending credits for WB. I hope I pulled it off!

This track took 3 hours to "compose" followed by another 6 hours of rearranging, fiddling with patches, timing the vocal sample, more rearranging, re-processing the vocal sample, troubleshooting the complementary lead (the distressed bell that starts everything - it was SO distressed it kept disappearing in the mix, and honestly that's a whole 2024 mood), fleshing out the drums, and tweaking the levels and mix. It did not feel like nine hours (I expected the M8's internal clock to say maybe around 5.5). This was a fun one to work on for sure! The patches are all originals that I've developed over WB this year, with the exception of the kick and snare (those are Trash80's FM drums). The machine sounds are an old, temperamental brochure folding machine at my work, and the vocals are left over from Week 17.

WB has been an amazing & fun challenge, and I think now I understand why people speak of it fondly, miss it, and also are a little relived when it skips a year. This is a fantastic community and I want to thank everyone for being so generous with their time & constructive criticism. I'm already looking forward to/dreading 2026.

Love the textures and the rhythmic pings. Put a big smile on my face. Nice way to finish the year. 👍👍

so distressed it's disappearing (...) that's a whole 2024 mood

Yeah, well said.

It shows you put a lot of energy into this. The track takes its time to fully explode, and that's great. The first minutes provide a nice immersion into the sonic world you're building. It builds up gradually very pleasantly. The finale at 2:50 is a great payoff.

Unrelatedly, some of the synth lines remind me of the golden age of krautrock / new-age music. Good stuff, instant nostalgia for me.

Yeah, it's crazy WB2024 is over. We did it! As for 2026... I'll decide closer to next December whether I want to be doing the full streak again. I learned a lot, but it was also a lot of work and took a lot of discipline. In any case, now's time to celebrate.

Some hot office gossip here! Love the gossiping voices throughout. Great melody, let's go!
I hear you on the thoughts on WB 100%
Crazy stuff, congrats on making it! By end of 2025 we'll probably have many ideas again and be ready for 2026 ... maybe. Have a great 2025!

Oh man, what a great way to end the year!!

What a fantastic summation of the year for you. Sounds are all stellar - they blend so well, and the mix is great. Your sense of composition has always been good, but this song definitely shows your year of work: grows, ebbs and flows, and ends with a bang. With your as always awesome vocal chops! (“What’s going on here?”) Just an absolute joy. I’ve looked forward to your tracks every week, and this is a great cap for ‘24.

And damn…I wouldn’t even be here making this comment if it weren’t for you! Thank you so much for telling me about Weekly Beats - it’s been a wild ride, and one of my favorite things about 2024 (and yeah, I got married this year - it faces stiff competition!).

Here’s to making more music in the future, and looking forward to/dreading WB ‘26!

My stuff tends to hit a tone and stay there, so I'm working on building and including some variation in tone. I'm a sucker for classic synth lines, and I'm glad I somehow manage to channel some of that nostalgia! As for WB, I think I'm going to enjoy not having to crank something out every week, but I will try to hold myself to a regular schedule of some sort. It is a lot of work, but I'm pleased and encouraged by the results! Thank you for taking the time to listen to my stuff and help me improve it - your comments have pushed me in welcome directions!

Wow thank you! I've never sure about my composition (I always feel like I'm not doing enough) so that is encouraging to hear! This was a fun one to create, and I was happy to have a little extra time to work on it. I'm only sorry I didn't think to tell you about WB sooner! I always love seeing your stuff pop up on Facebook, but I've moved away from FB and (selfishly) decided to take your music with me! (I'm mostly kidding - I thought you'd get a kick out of WB.)

I forgot it was only this year you guys got married! Congratulations again on ensnaring a fantastic collaborator/songwriter/vocalist (and more). I can't wait to hear what you guys come up with next!

This is SUUUUUUUUUCH a cool use of all those office noises!!!! Fantasic!!!!
I'm a big fan of how playful the main melodic bell is - it feels like it's almost playing tag with some of the other voices in the mix, calling and responding to them. SUPER cool stuff. Not to mention the vocal chopping, too!
The hours spent extra polishing really show here, this feels like a very complete work. Awesomely done!!!
