Let's Judge Children!

By MRDRCAT on August 25, 2024 11:16 pm

Back to my cheesy upbeat formula! I don't know why I like doing these.

The "guitar" part was a theme I wanted to develop for Week 27. Then every week since then with no luck. I wouldn't say it clicked this week, but I forced myself to add a few more parts and try playing off it a little. Once I swapped out almost every synth patch it came together. Then I added vocal samples from a public domain film called "For Health and Happiness" - it's about childhood nutrition, but the voiceover makes it sound like a livestock auction. I swear I only edited for timing.

Metro Grade Beats told me to do more with the snare, so if it's really hammy I'm going to blame (and thank) them.

You're not wrong about the livestock auction part - eeesh. Also awesome. You always find the best samples.

Great moment when the guitar and the kick burst in at :30...but when the guitar locked in with the bassline, things just took off. So much fun. When that sweep up came in at 2:00 and everything came in, it was pure joy.

I'm a bit disturbed by the "small anklebones". WTF.

Oh wow, the very first synth that plays in the intro REEEALLY reminds me of the beginning of sleepside's tune for the Dungeon Synth. This, however, has a much different feel than that, hahahahaha... This feels super upbeat, I really like it. Definitely has your signature style of bounciness and uplifting. Even when the "vocalist" seems like they're auctioning off children, hahahahahaha.... I super liked the sound design in general here - all great choices. Very nice work!!!

Firstly, I love the title! And the vocal samples are so creepy with their ... ah, inappropriate positivity about these kids' attributes. As jegasus says, it sounds like she's trying to sell them to someone! And the rest of the song is so upbeat too, I'm so conflicted when listening! Haha! I love the mix of synths and how they all work together too. Nice work!

Lol, great stuff! It is cheesy, but it’s also awesome! Love the bassline and the chippy lead lines! The voiceover works nicely too!

Dig the melody that jumps in with the hard pulsing kick. Sweet public domain samples! I need to try that!
Who knows why we write the things we write. I'm constantly writing video game dungeon music. You do you!

Thanks! I had a lot of fun with this one. There are some you really enjoy making no matter how they end up, and this was one of them. Watching the whole short for context...well, it's possible, but I don't know if it makes the voiceover any better. It's at https://archive.org/details/ForHealt1941

Wow - I'm honoured to be compared to sleepside!! Thank you for enjoying the sound design. It always seems like a struggle for me to choose/craft sounds that work well together, but hopefully I'm getting better at it!

Thank you! I didn't even use all the vocal samples I could have. That short is something else. I'm glad you like my weird jumble of synths!

Hey I loves me some dungeon music! If you need public domain samples for anything (voices, music samples, video clips etc) archive.org has a lot of old government films, educational shorts, and more. I linked this particular short in my reply to PaisleyFrog's comment above.
