Groovy Science Hour

By MRDRCAT on September 22, 2024 11:06 pm

All Deluge this week! Going for "opening theme" with some retro vibes. I wanted to add samples from an old science show, like Mr Wizard or something, but ran out of time. I'll have to go back and add the vocal chops later, I think. Without them to add variety it gets a little samey. I don't know the new song arranger yet, so this is literally me triggering different parts on the fly to build the song live, and I didn't quite stick the landing. Once I have time to figure out song mode I should be able to flesh this one out the way it deserves to be. Overall I like some of the ideas, so this might be a future "I had this floating around for years and decided to finish it" sort of track.

This structure was triggered live? Oh hell naw, you absolutely stuck the landing! Tens all around (although the Russian judge gave you an 8.4).

Love how this built. The bass kicking in was an EVENT. The little arp you had flitting f about just said “science!” as well smile Absolutely feels like a theme song.

I can 100% imagine this track with samples and how you chop them - I want to hear it that way someday. That said, I enjoyed the HELL out of this track - I’m making a note here, huge success.

Loving that Human League / Thomas Dolby lead. It indeed has some "early 80s science show" vibe to it.

I could almost see the low def credits rolling over some guys in grey jackets smile

Topic "Opening theme" was definitely nailed big_smile This really does sound like an opening theme from an 80s science show. Really looking forward to hearing it with the vocal chops one day

Groovy indeed! That bassline is juicy, goes well the lead. Loved the little arps too. Loved the cheerful 80s vibe. The breakdown at around 2:00 is great! Pretty cool that you arranged this live, doesn't sound samey to me!

This is so interesting!!! I wasn't able to immediately clock this as your work! I think that's because the sounds were from the Deluge, not the M8! Hahahahaha.... But when more voices came on and the bouncier groovier tone was set I was like "oh yeah, I can still hear MRDRCAT's special touch here".
And you were able to hit the "90s science tv show for kids" really well. I can totally hear this being played as a scientist with an impossible hairdo in a brightly colored lab coat flies through space using the power of green screens. Meanwhile, their quirky side kick lab assistants are making "OMG" faces as they pour the contents of an Erlenmeyer flask into a Beaker flask and it all blows up in a purple cloud.
All of this to say: this was VERY fun to listen to, hahahahahaha...

I turn on the TV, Mr. Wizard theme song comes on by MRDRCAT and I'm groovin, ready to get my experiment on. Love it

Definitely has an opening and retro theme! Reminds me of the title music to old school kids cartoons (thinking specifically Ulysses 31 here, just based on one of the synth sounds…). I really, really want a deluge… Good work!

Thank you! Yeah, the Russian judge is strict, but maybe if I had those vocal chops in there... I need to find the time to dive into the new Deluge community firmware so I can include the samples in the whole project file instead of importing everything into a DAW. I'd love to do this 100% hardware. I'm glad you liked it! This one tackled my brain on an otherwise quiet motorcycle commute to work, and I'm super happy I was able to keep it in my head until I could noodle it out.

Look at me still talking when there's science to do. Thanks again for listening!

Now I know what to do for a music video! big_smile

Woo hoo thanks! I've been collecting all my WB on a couple of running Bandcamp albums, so this one might be delayed while I get the vocals in place!

Yay thank you! Mute groups help a lot, but there's still a lot of scrolling and worrying about muting/unmuting individual sounds based on how I want the song to progress. This one is simple, but so am I so I may have met my match!

Oh my goodness, do I actually have a style? YAY! Also, from your description of the TV show I worry you may have been gloriously twisted around during your formative years by Beakman's World! smile

Thanks!! At first read I thought you said "ready to get experimented on" and I already had the gloves snapped onto my hands by the time I re-read it. Oh well maybe next time!

Oh sweet - I have to find the Ulysses 31 theme now! Thank you for the kind words - the Deluge really is a LOT of fun. I usually use the M8 because it's always with me and I'm far more familiar with it than any of my other equipment, but the Deluge is something special. It begs for experimentation and creation. What you need to get done can be done quickly, and when you're ready to dive deeper, it just goes and goes.

I found the Ulysses 31 theme and I unironically LOVE IT. Thank you for this gem!
