Meth Mesa Meditation

By ModuLoBro on March 22, 2026 10:04 pm

Deluge only.
I was preparing for a live-sampling gig that happened last night (3/21) and started listening to some of the tidbits I've grabbed and/or loaded in Samplr over the years. I picked a few favorites and threw them in the Deluge.

It turned into a somber meditation, not necessarily on my own 22 years in New Mexico, but more the toll that drug use and sales have had on the state and ABQ in particular. It was meth; now it's fentanyl. Things looked damned grim when I visited last year.

One of the prominent sounds is a moth inside a rice-paper lampshade. Can you spot that sample??

hugs and love to all y'all.

This is crazy as hell, dude. I love the droning bass. Entrancing.

Question - was this live-sampling gig inside that weird fever dream in Event Horizon? Jk jk this is awesome and super unnerving in awesome ways!

Is the moth sample the one that starts around 1.19? Either way, really sick piece!

That BASSSSSS. This is the soundtrack to sleep paralysis. The granular vocal that starts at 1:19 makes my spine crumple.

YAY - yeah, I love that vocal sound. OMG, sleep paralysis? Now I have a new thing to be afraid of... Sorry about your spine tho. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

nope, that's a voice.

check out 2:03, the rhythm layered over on the bass. The shade was a four-sided column of maybe 9-10" height. He got in there and started banging around. I put an alligator-clipped stereo mini mic pair on opposite top edges and hit record. I got this thumping like someone slapping an upright bass, and then "tingggggs" whenever he hit the bulb. It was absolute magic. I ended up making a quad piece from it, essentially placing the audience inside the shade. Only performed it once. Still one of my fave recordings.

lol no. But it was rad. I go onstage with empty samplers (Samplr on one iPad, SpaceCraft on the other) and just start grabbing stuff. Great week - played 3/21 with drummer Bill Harris from Chicago – that one got wild, total blast - and Thursday night with Ted Gordon, who is touring to promote his new book The Composer's Black Box: Making Music in Cybernetic America.

argh. my Mac keeps auto-correcting to . sigh....
