Generated chords, Midi-performed solo, on M8

By ModalModule on January 9, 2022 2:56 am

Great title huh? I figure I'll name them based on what I was experimenting with, for my own reference. Anyway, as the name implies, this was done on the m8 (hi Trash80!), Starting with a chord prog that was generated with RAN on SCG (modes in this case) and TBL (7th pop voicings based on diatonic chords within mode), using SED till I found one I liked (actually changed it halfway through the prog, and manually entered the altered V to button it up). Then I plugged in my controller and took a solo (had to clean up some KILs but for the most part untouched), then generated another prog for the B, midi'd in a melody for that, then just messed around with production etc to fill it out. The end is funny: I turned SED back to 00, and just let it do whatever. I actually rendered it 3 times and this was the "best" ending of the 3.

Cool collab between human and machine big_smile and super cool B part! the first part sounds a bit random .... well duh! but the B part fits and kinda makes the first part work. And hey there is even almost a drum solo smile
is the midi stuff quantized by the m8? can it be not-quantized? for this track it works as it is but I'm just curious.

solos are amazing in this track!  well done

the intro made me ancipate a classic intelligent dnb track – then soon it went off into Unexpected territory. well played solo

It was quantized by a grid of 64th notes (iirc), so pretty close to unquantized territory. Since it was recorded into m8 as it was performed, there will always be a limit of the grid itself, and it was already unwieldy dealing with such a fine grid. Haha
The chords are "random" in a way, but are chosen based on modal mixture, so not just completely arbitrary, or "non-functional". It's a fun challenge to try to make them feel like they fit more than they might without "assistance".

Thanks! Helps that I'm really bad at genres...

The voice-leading over the progression is ace. It always blows my mind when a chip tune sound w/ an appropriate context can sound swanky / cheeky / sultry... lovely work!

yeah!! more m8 jazzy stuff like this please big_smile

Thanks! This was a very new mixture of things for me, so I'm really glad it turned out even half decently. Haha

No promises, but with such encouragement from you I'd sure like to oblige! big_smile

That bass gets my head nodding and my feet tapping!

that jazzy solo heart

woah, this is a really wild combination of ideas and sounds! I wish I knew what all the acronyms meant...I assume they refer to M8 specific features?

haha yes, sorry, nerd talk here. Each are "effects commands" to control different things. RAN for random choice of whatever parameter was before it. SCG for which scale to use globally, TBL for which table for that instrument to use, SED for which seed (limiting the random choices to something that repeats consistently), KIL for killing notes (as they automatically play continuously). Any other questions feel free to ask. smile
