Still Alive (SGCS's Post-Genic Remix)

By MLDVR on December 9, 2012 3:49 am

Okay, so my annual house gig called Goatfest 3 was on saturday and it was fan-fucking-tastic. It was also the first time i performed a set as SGCS, which went horribly haha.

That being said, i didnt have a song lined up this week, except for this big one that i have been working on, was going to save it till the end or something but i figured its probably best now since i didnt record a song or anything.

So here it is, a big, massive remix i have been working on for some time now. I am VERY proud of this, and i think its up till now the best thing i have done. Forgive my narcissism. Using a combination of Kontakt and Reason i made a Bjork style (circa Post and Homogenic era) remix of the Still Alive song from Portal.

Enjoy this please, i know you will.

This is deep for sure! I'm sorry to say that Glados voice gets a bit annoying after some time. Overall a nice and profound take that deserves credits! Hats off

That is some heavy awesome sound.  Very intricate with great transitions from section to section.  I may be one of the few people left on the planet that have not heard the original but I'll have to check it out for contrast.  Great work as always... enjoy the range of styles you employ.

Some cool production in here.  The vox work really well - that crazy tuning glitch amazing!  Only thing is there is a compressor in here that is fluttering hardcore that'd I'd back off in mastering a bit... but on the whole it's an amazing balls track!!   It's sequencing sounds like you've spent a LONG time getting it right.  Thumbs up!

@Ashtom. Thanks mate

@NWSPR yeah man the transitions were what made this track so diverse with its changing styles. It was going to be full on orchestral but then i wanted it to be a little more ambient too, so that happened, and then i wanted it to be a little more dense and rhythmic etc etc. Cheers.

@CTrix The compression here is not the greatest and its probably shows my L33T comp skills i had back a while ago (tho it might also be cause of the MP3 conversion, but i doubt it) so thanks for picking up on that, where was it exactly though you heard the fluttering, its hard to pick up on these Mac speakers. sadly the hard drive backup where i had my session on is fubar, so hopefully the hard drive guys can retrieve the data but i don't have much hope for it, so for now all i got is this mix.

This was originally a TAFE assignment i did last year, and though i completed the assignment i wasn't satisfied with the remix so i started again keeping only the best bit and reworking the instruments which often crashed while i was bouncing the track.

So yes, i didnt make this track in a week and its original incarnation dates back before WB even started! So despite breaking the rules, i really wanted to showcase what I can do if i spent time on a track for a long period of time instead of a week which i have been doing for the past year.

That crazy tuning glitch is simply an sidechain on the vocal track to a H-Delay plugin and having happy super fun times with it! Thanks alot.

Harmonies are bizarre as hell - I dig!

Takes you though some interesting sections.  A diverse range of sounds and style.  The vocals are a trip and I dig the higher glitch drone sound after "still alive..." about a quarter way in followed by the groove.

disturbing but catchy. extremely catchy.

Post-Genic smile yeah i remember this very well. rules so hard. shades of Vespertine too I reckon! it's so well put together. Bjork would be proud. production is so good. In Iceland they'd call you Seagull Chainmundsd

well it cut out the Icelandic characters so that last sentence lost a bit of oomph ^
